Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing so honestly about what you have been carrying for more than a year. It is understandable that you feel sick, tired and fed up when the place that should be a refuge no longer feels like home, when the smell fills the hall and now even your bedroom, and when attempts to speak kindly have been met with manipulation and louder disruptions.
God wants you to know real peace, and Scripture shows that peace comes in two ways. First there is peace with God, which only comes through the blood of Jesus Christ shed for our sins. When we are reconciled to God through Him, the war between us and God is over. Then there is the peace of God, the steady keeping of your heart and mind when life around you is chaotic. Jesus said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives. The world cannot give this kind of peace and it cannot understand it, but it is the peace that guards our hearts and minds in Christ and passes all human understanding.
That second peace is described as perfect peace for the person whose mind is stayed on the Lord because he trusts in Him. In a world filled with turmoil and strife, that peace comes as you turn your thoughts toward Him and rest in the finished work of Jesus, believing that He will take care of what you cannot control. It does not mean the problem disappears instantly, but it means your inner life can be kept steady even while the outer situation is still difficult. The Lord has ordained peace for His people and His thoughts toward you are thoughts of peace, not evil, to give you hope. He has not forgotten you.
At the same time God calls us to seek peace where He has placed us and to sow peace as we are able. That does not mean pretending there is peace when there is none, or accepting what is harmful. It means choosing not to answer manipulation with manipulation, and asking God to help you act wisely and calmly. Continue to pray for the peace of the place where you live, for in its peace you will find more peace, and pray also for your neighbour, that God would bring conviction, healing and change. The Scripture says there is no lasting peace for those who continue in wickedness, they are like a troubled sea, but God offers peace and healing to all who will turn to Him, whether far off or near.
Practically, it is right to protect your health and your home. Keep a simple written record of when the smell and the slamming occur and how it affects you, and seek help through the proper and peaceful channels available to you, such as a landlord, housing manager or local authorities who can address health and nuisance concerns. If you have a trusted friend, pastor or counselor nearby, invite them to support you and to help you think through next steps so you do not carry this alone. Above all, keep your mind stayed on the Lord through prayer and His Word, asking Him to fill your heart with His peace as you trust Him day by day.
The God of peace is with you and He will in time deal with all that is wrong. He is our peace who breaks down walls of hostility, and He promises a day when His people will dwell in safety with no one to make them afraid. Until then He is able to keep you in perfect peace as you look to Him.
I pray for you now. Father, thank you that through Jesus Christ we can have peace with you. I ask that you would let this dear one experience your deep and perfect peace that guards heart and mind. You see this home, the sickness and weariness, the long months of disruption, and the difficult interactions with this neighbour. Bring relief, wisdom and proper help, protect health, and work in the neighbour's heart to bring change. Keep this precious person steady in Christ, with mind stayed on you and trust renewed each day. In Jesus name, Amen.
