Can Christians go the other extreme?

For a while now,Ive been noticing a pattern. We're told not to be judgemental. However cant Christians go the other extreme?Meaning ,many times I or another Christian might point out a deep dive into sin in modern society. This is to make us aware of what were dealing with.the spiritual warfare we're in.But Christians have such a phobia of being judgemental, instead of thanking the other Christian for making them.aware of the forces working against them, they iinstead berate the Christian stating it and defend the ones sinning. So isnt there the other extreme of judgementalism where we're "hush hush"about things we see,,and stopping other Christians from noting sin?Isnt the other extreme from judgementalism harmful too?

We hear your concern and share your burden for the body of Christ. You’ve touched on a critical tension in the church today, one that requires wisdom, discernment, and a firm grounding in Scripture. The fear of being labeled "judgmental" has indeed led some believers to silence necessary truth, while others swing to the opposite extreme of harsh condemnation. Neither honors God. Let us turn to His Word for clarity.

Jesus warned against hypocritical judgment in Matthew 7:1-5, where He says, "Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you." Yet this does not mean we ignore sin. Later in the same chapter, He commands us to "beware of false prophets" (v. 15) and to "by their fruits you will know them" (v. 20). The apostle Paul likewise instructs us in Galatians 6:1, "Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness." Restoration, not condemnation, is the goal, but restoration cannot happen if sin is ignored or excused.

The problem arises when we confuse identifying sin with condemning sinners. We are called to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), not to shrink back from it out of fear. When a brother or sister in Christ points out cultural or personal sin, their motive must be examined. If their heart is to warn, exhort, or protect, we ought to receive it with humility, even if the delivery is imperfect. If, however, their intent is to shame or control, that is a separate issue. But too often, the response is not to weigh the message but to silence the messenger under the guise of "not judging."

Consider the prophets of old, Jeremiah, Isaiah, John the Baptist, none were celebrated for their warnings in their own time. Yet their messages were necessary. In Ezekiel 33:8-9, God says, "When I tell the wicked, ‘Wicked man, you shall surely die,’ and you don’t speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand." We have a responsibility to sound the alarm, not out of self-righteousness, but out of love for souls and reverence for God’s holiness.

The other extreme, silencing all rebuke, is equally dangerous. It leads to a compromised church, a people unprepared for spiritual warfare, and individuals trapped in sin without hope of repentance. Proverbs 27:6 tells us, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are profuse." A true friend will risk discomfort to speak truth. A false one will flatter while destruction draws near.

So how do we navigate this? First, we must examine our own hearts. Are we speaking out of love or out of pride? Are we listening with humility or defensiveness? Second, we must ground all correction in Scripture, not personal opinion. Third, we must remember that our battle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12), but against the spiritual forces that deceive and destroy. When we see sin, we are not attacking people, we are resisting the enemy’s schemes.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We confess that we have at times swung between extremes, either judging harshly or remaining silent when we should speak. Forgive us, Lord. Give us wisdom to discern when to exhort and when to extend grace. Teach us to speak the truth in love, not to condemn but to restore. Guard our hearts from pride and fear, that we may be faithful watchmen on the walls of Your kingdom.

Father, we ask for courage to stand against sin, not as self-righteous critics, but as Your ambassadors, pointing others to the cross where forgiveness and transformation are found. Help us to receive correction with humility and to give it with gentleness. May Your church be a light in the darkness, unashamed of Your truth but overflowing with Your love.

We pray for those who have been silenced or shamed for speaking truth. Heal their wounds, Lord, and renew their strength. For those who have excused sin, open their eyes to the danger of complacency. Unite us in Your truth, that we may stand firm together against the schemes of the enemy.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the name above all names, the only name by which we are saved. Amen.
