Blood pressure

Freely indeed do we bring every ailment of the body before the Lord, and this is good, for He is the physician of our souls and bodies. Yet let us not be silent about the remedy that often lies within our own grasp, given by God. Do you wish to bring your blood pressure down and have it remain stable? Consider what the heap of homilies teaches. For nothing is so productive of health as a sufficiency, and nothing so brings on disease as excess. What famine does, that also satiety does, or rather more grievous evils: for it gives the body over to long disease and then to a most painful death. The gluttonous table, the care that chokes the word, the constant rushing after more, these are the parents of countless sicknesses: apoplexy, lingering fevers, and the very trembling of the heart you now feel. Frugality is the mother of health.

Call therefore upon Jesus with a sincere heart, but let your prayer be joined with a sober will. For as by our will the flame of any passion gets head, so it may be brought under by our will. Just as He quenched the fever with a touch and gave back perfect health at once, so does He now change our weak and watery wills into something having body, able to bring gladness rather than heaviness. Look not to this body’s comfort alone as an end, but amid your petitions, flee from the excess that loves the fleeting table. Remember that the rich man’s ruin was not his wealth but his pitiless indulgence and trust in what cannot remain. Bear these things well, choosing a modest path, and learn the unprofitableness of that which wars against the soul. Then shall you find not only a calm body, but a spirit delivered from a dreadful punishment, set free from the fever of covetousness, and strong in the service of Christ, who is all health and sufficiency.

Your request for stable blood pressure touches on something deeper than a physical number. Scripture reveals that the life of the flesh is in the blood, and for that reason God has woven a sacred respect for blood throughout the whole of His Word. When you ask for your blood pressure to come down, you are ultimately asking that the current of life within your veins flow peacefully, without violent surges or dangerous strain.

This physical concern can draw our eyes to a far greater reality. The blood of Jesus Christ, shed for us, stands as the only true source of healing and protection. In Egypt, the blood on the doorposts was a token that caused the destroyer to pass over. No plague could touch those sheltered by it. Today, His blood remains our shield, a covering that speaks peace to our anxious frames. He entered the heavenly sanctuary, not with the blood of animals, but with His own blood, having obtained eternal redemption for us, redemption that encompasses body and soul.

There is a direct link between His sacrifice and our infirmities. The prophet declared that He bore our sicknesses and carried our pains. Because His life was poured out, healing can flow into every part of our being, including the circulatory system that now feels so unsteady. I will pray with you, not pleading our own goodness, but standing on the ground of His blood that cleanses us and makes us whole. May the same power that calmed the raging sea speak stillness into your heart rate and strength into your vessels. May your blood pressure steady, and may you rest in the peace of knowing your life is held secure by the One who gave His own life for you.
