We come before the throne of grace with hearts full of gratitude for the Fatherhood of God, who is the source of all fatherhood on earth. Your Word declares, "For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named" (Ephesians 3:14-15 WEB). We rejoice in the truth that through Christ, we have been adopted as Your children, and we can call You "Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15 WEB).
Father, we lift up this dear one’s earthly father and stepmother before You. We ask that You would heal the wounds of the heart where love and sonship have been lacking. Lord, we pray that You would build up this father in the knowledge and experience of Your love, that he may reflect the heart of the perfect Father to his children. Soften his heart to receive the truth of Your Word and the transforming power of Your Spirit. We declare over him the promise of Your Word: "I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty" (2 Corinthians 6:18 WEB).
For this stepmother, we pray for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Your Word is clear: "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9 WEB). Lord, open her eyes to see her need for a Savior, and draw her to Yourself. We also ask for Your healing touch as she grieves the loss of her earthly patriarchal figure. Comfort her with the truth that You are near to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18 WEB). Grant her wisdom as she navigates this season of loss, and fill her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7 WEB).
Father, we pray for both of them to grow in their walk with You. Strengthen them to contribute to Your kingdom through formal schooling, evangelism, study, intercession, and discipleship. Keep them healthy, happy, and holy, set apart for Your purposes. May they live out the command to love their neighbors as themselves (Mark 12:31 WEB), and may they be faithful in attending not just one, but multiple gatherings where Your Word is taught and Your people are edified. Grant them wisdom as they study the Scriptures, and help them to count their blessings daily, giving thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18 WEB).
Lord, we ask that You would protect them from temptation, sin, deception, lies, and the schemes of the evil one. Your Word warns us, "Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8 WEB). Equip them with the full armor of God so that they may stand firm against the enemy’s attacks (Ephesians 6:11 WEB). Fill them with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so they may walk in a manner worthy of You, fully pleasing You in every good work (Colossians 1:9-10 WEB).
We also lift up this dear one who has come before You in prayer. We thank You for their desire to honor their father and stepmother, as Your Word commands: "Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise: that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth" (Ephesians 6:2-3 WEB). Lord, purify their love for their family, making it sincere and undefiled, as Peter writes: "Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth through the Spirit in sincere brotherly affection, love one another from the heart fervently" (1 Peter 1:22 WEB). Help them to love not just in word, but in deed and truth (1 John 3:18 WEB).
Father, we also want to gently address the importance of praying in the name of Jesus. It is only through the name of Jesus that we have access to You, for He Himself said, "Most certainly I tell you, whatever you may ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you" (John 16:23 WEB). There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12 WEB). We encourage this dear one to always lift up prayers in the powerful and mighty name of Jesus, for it is through Him alone that we are reconciled to You.
Let us now pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for Your love and faithfulness. We thank You for the gift of family, both earthly and spiritual, and for the privilege of being called Your children. Lord, we lift up this father and stepmother to You, asking that You would draw them closer to Yourself. Heal their hearts, mend their wounds, and fill them with Your peace. Grant them salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, and equip them to live lives that honor You.
Father, we pray for wisdom, strength, and protection over them. Guard their hearts and minds from the enemy’s lies, and fill them with Your truth. Help them to grow in their knowledge of You and to walk in obedience to Your Word. May they be a light to those around them, sharing the love of Christ through their words and actions.
Lord, we also pray for this dear one who has come before You. Strengthen their faith, and help them to love their family with a pure and undefiled love. Teach them to honor their father and stepmother as You have commanded, and to pray for them faithfully in the name of Jesus.
We ask all these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
