You ask for many things, and rightly so, for prayer is the wing of the soul. Yet I see in your request a great thirst for signs and wonders, for the miraculous gifts of tongues and healings. Let me remind you of a greater marvel: that a sinner should speak the word of Christ with boldness, and that hearts of stone should be softened. Do you not know that John the Baptist worked no miracle, yet all Judea went out to him? His boldness, his holy life, these drew the multitudes. So also the apostles did not at first go forth with signs, but with the fire of the Spirit, and the place was shaken because they prayed for boldness to speak the word.

Do not set your heart too much upon the outward wonders, as if without them the gospel is weak. The gospel is the power of God, whether confirmed by signs or not. Signs are His to give as He wills; sometimes He bestows them even upon unworthy men, as Balaam, for the sake of others. But what profit was it to them? They perished all the more. Seek rather the gift of a right life, of love unfeigned, of humility. The poor man Peter, having no silver or gold, yet had authority to chastise Ananias. That authority came not from miracles but from the boldness of his manner of life. So you also, if you cast away all you possess, if you follow Christ, you may be as Peter. But if you cling to the world and ask for signs, you risk falling into the snare of pride. Did not the Corinthians, puffed up by their gifts, tear the church apart?

Pray then for the one thing needful: that God would open a door for the word, that He would grant you and your team boldness to speak the mystery of Christ as you ought. This is the true miracle, that a timid tongue should be set on fire, that bonds and fears should become the very things that make you speak the more. For can any man bind the tongue of an evangelist? The more he is bound, the more he runs. If the outreach should be canceled, do not be dismayed; God is not hindered. Paul in chains exhorted the Colossians to pray for his boldness, not for his release. He knew that his bonds made the word run swifter.

As for learning Spanish, whether by study or by gift, be zealous, but let it be for the edification of the hearers. If God gives the gift of tongues, remember He gives it as He wills, not as we demand. Yet if you never speak in other tongues, still let your life be a loud tongue, crying repentance. That is the marvel that silences the adversary, not the sight of a ghost lifted up, but a soul lifted from sin.

And for protection from wicked men and the evil one, indeed pray without ceasing. But know that the greatest protection is the peace of a good conscience and the covering of humility. If you suffer for the gospel, that is the gift of grace, a free gift making Christ your debtor. Rejoice in that, not in the exultation of powers. So go forth; make Christ known; trust the word to do its work. Whether signs follow or not, the word will not return empty. The power is in the Name, not in the vessel. Only be bold, be holy, and give thanks in all things.

Your desire to see the Word run swiftly and to be equipped to reach across the language barrier is a beautiful reflection of how the Spirit works. Human language, from its very origin, has been marked by both God’s sovereignty and human limitation. After the flood, one language and one speech united humanity, but pride led to division at Babel. Ever since, we live with the reality of many tongues and the constant need to bridge them for the sake of the gospel. Yet God specializes in turning confusion into revelation.

Learning Spanish through study, immersing yourself in the Scripture, listening to others proclaim Christ in that language, is a wise and diligent path. Natural gifts for language are part of how He equips us. But the Spirit can also do what the intellect alone cannot. On the day of Pentecost, disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and suddenly declared God’s mighty works in languages they had never studied. That miracle was not for their own edification alone; it was a sign that drew the astonished crowd to hear Peter declare Jesus. As you pray for both the natural discipline and the supernatural enablement, remember that any form of speech, whether learned or miraculously given, must flow from and be governed by love. The Scriptures are emphatic: if we speak with the tongues of men or even of angels but have not love, we are just an echoing noise. Love is what makes our words carry the fragrance of Christ.

There is also a deeper truth to hold close tonight: the loftiest worship and the most profound intercession often transcend language altogether. The human vocabulary, even at its richest, is an agreement of sounds assigned to ideas, and it falls infinitely short of capturing the glory of God. When Paul was caught up into paradise, he heard things that could not, and, he said, should not, be reduced to earthly words. The Spirit helps us in this weakness, interceding with groanings that bypass our limited tongues. So do not fear that imperfect Spanish or a lack of eloquence will hinder the Lord’s work. He confirms His Word with signs and wonders by His own power, and His voice goes out through all the earth, even through earthen vessels like us.

I stand with you in this request. May the Father bless you indeed and keep you. May He cause His face to shine on your whole team, giving you boldness and access with confidence through faith in Christ. May He protect you from evil people and every snare of the evil one. May He open mouths to declare the gospel clearly and confirm it with the works of the Spirit that draw hearts to Jesus. And may the peace that surpasses every understanding guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, keeping you steady whether the visible results are dramatic or quiet. Go in the authority He has given, and let the Word run swiftly.

We are so grateful you shared your heart with us and allowed us to stand alongside you in prayer for your outreach. What a privilege it was to lift up your small group, asking the Lord to bless and keep you, to make His face shine upon you, and to grant you His peace as you gathered. We prayed fervently that the event would not be canceled, that hearts would be drawn to Christ, and that the Word would run swiftly through your midst.

We joined you in asking for supernatural boldness and utterance, that each member of your team—including you—would declare Christ with confidence and that the Holy Spirit would confirm the Word with signs, wonders, and gifts. We also prayed for protection—from deception, from the evil one, from false believers, and from every form of temptation and fear. And how encouraging it was to lift up your desire to grow in language and in the miraculous, both through natural study and the Holy Spirit’s supernatural work!
