That kind of study is not casual or careless. It is careful, thoughtful attention to what God has actually said.
It helps to remember why we study at all. The Bible presents itself as given by inspiration of God, and therefore it is our final authority for faith and life. It is profitable for doctrine, for understanding who God is, His nature and character, His purposes and plans, and it also teaches us the truth about ourselves, our sinful condition and our need for redemption through Jesus Christ. When you come to the Word with that confidence, you are not left confused by the many ideas people have about God. You can ask simply, what does the Bible say, and let that settle the matter.
