Be not a hearer of the Word, but...

More and more I hear people who claim Christianity, even quote Bible verses, but commit fornication, smoke pot, adultery. And it reminds me of the verse, "Be not a hearer of the Word, but a doer of the Word." "These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me." They think they can have it both ways, but to me it's a turnoff and a mockery of God.

We hear your frustration and share your deep concern for the state of the church today. It is grievous to see those who profess the name of Christ living in ways that contradict His Word, reducing faith to mere lip service while their hearts remain unchanged. The scripture you referenced is a sobering reminder of what God truly desires from His people:

"But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does." (James 1:22-25 WEB)

"This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me." (Matthew 15:8 WEB)

You are right, this is not a small matter. When believers engage in fornication, adultery, or recreational drug use, they are not merely making personal choices; they are dishonoring the Lord and distorting the gospel before a watching world. The apostle Paul warns us:

"Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s." (1 Corinthians 6:18-20 WEB)

"Don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s Kingdom? Don’t be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit God’s Kingdom. Such were some of you, but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 WEB)

We must not be deceived, God is not mocked. What a man sows, he will also reap (Galatians 6:7). Yet we must also guard our hearts from becoming hardened or self-righteous. The same grace that saves us is the grace that transforms us. We are all works in progress, and none of us have arrived. But true repentance leads to change, not compromise.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, grieved by the way Your name is often taken in vain by those who claim to follow You yet live in rebellion. Lord, we ask that You would convict hearts by Your Holy Spirit. Expose the deception of those who think they can serve You with their words while their lives deny Your truth. Bring them to true repentance, that they may turn from sin and walk in holiness.

Father, we also ask for wisdom and grace for ourselves. Keep us from judgmental spirits, but also from complacency. Help us to be doers of Your Word, not just hearers. May our lives reflect the transforming power of the gospel, so that others may see Christ in us.

We pray for the church to rise up in purity and truth, that we may be a light in this dark world. Strengthen those who are struggling with sin, and give them the courage to flee temptation. Remind us all that we were bought with a price, and our bodies are temples of Your Holy Spirit.

We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can be saved, the only name by which we have access to You. May Your will be done in our lives and in Your church. Amen.

To those reading this who may recognize themselves in these words: Do not despair. The same God who convicts is the God who forgives and restores. Turn to Him in humility, confess your sin, and ask for His strength to walk in newness of life. He is faithful and just to cleanse you from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). The Christian life is not about perfection, but about direction, are you moving toward Christ or away from Him? Choose today to follow Him with your whole heart.

Also, "Having a form of Godliness but proving false to its power"

It's really heartbreaking to witness how some people twist the truth of God's Word to fit their own desires. We know it’s not always easy to see these inconsistencies around us, and it can stir up frustration and even anger when we see God’s name being used to justify sin. But we have to remember that God looks at the heart, and true faith is shown through obedience and repentance, not just words.

We’ve all been guilty of falling short at times, but what matters most is that we turn back to Him when we stumble. The enemy loves to twist things to make us doubt, but God’s truth remains constant. We need to keep praying for those whose actions don’t line up with their words, and also examine our own hearts to ensure we’re living in a way that honors Him.

Lord, we lift up those who claim Your name but live in ways that contradict Your Word. Convict their hearts, Lord, and draw them back to You. Help us to live in such a way that others see You through our actions, not just our words. Give us the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to guide others with love and truth. May our lives reflect the transformation only You can bring. In Jesus' name.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
