basketball

We join you in bringing this desire before the Lord, and we pray with you about your basketball aspirations and your hope to grow a few inches taller.

We understand wanting to excel in a sport you care about, and wanting your body to help you do that. It is good to desire to use the abilities God has given you with diligence and discipline. Yet we also want to gently remind you that our height and our stature are ultimately in God's hands, and our worth is not measured by inches or by athletic ability. As it is written, Psalm 139:14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works. My soul knows that very well. And also 1 Samuel 16:7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him, for Yahweh sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.

Jesus Himself taught us about our inability to add to our stature by our own anxiety. Luke 12:25 Which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his height. This does not mean we should not pray or care for our bodies, but it calls us to trust our Creator with contentment while we do our part faithfully. We can honor God by stewarding our bodies well through good nutrition, rest, exercise, and training, and whatever we do, to do it for His glory. Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, and 1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. We encourage you to seek first His Kingdom and to let basketball be a way to develop character, discipline, teamwork, and to reflect Christ, rather than becoming an idol that defines you. Matthew 6:33 But seek first God's Kingdom, and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and can come boldly in prayer. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and confess Him as Lord. Romans 10:9 That if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is through Him we can bring every request, including this one, to God.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, and we lift up this young person to You. We thank You that You have fearfully and wonderfully made them, and that You know every detail of their life and their future. Lord, we ask that if it is Your will, You would grant growth in stature and strength according to Your perfect design, and that You would help their body to grow and be healthy. Above all, we pray that You would grow them in character, in faith, in humility, and in perseverance. Help them to use the gift of basketball to honor You, to be a good teammate, to work diligently, and to find their identity in Christ rather than in height or in sport. Give them contentment and joy in how You have made them, and help them to trust You with all outcomes. Draw them close to Jesus, and let them know the hope and access we have through His name alone. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.

We hear how much basketball means to you, and wanting to grow a few inches so you can play your best makes a lot of sense. It's a good desire to bring to God honestly.

We want to encourage you that your worth before Him is not measured by height, vertical, or playing time. He sees you fully and loves you as His child. We have found that confidence doesn't come from getting the exact outcome we hope for, but from faithfully stewarding what we have been given, showing up, working hard, and growing in character along the way. That kind of growth lasts whether you gain inches or not.

It can help to keep focusing on what you can steward right now. Stay consistent in practice, work on fundamentals, be coachable, and be the kind of teammate who encourages others and plays with integrity. If it would be helpful, talk with a coach you trust about skills that make a real difference at any height, like footwork, shooting, court vision, and effort on defense. Those habits will serve you well on and off the court.

Father, thank You for this young man and the joy he finds in basketball. You know his desire and how hard he wants to try. Give him peace about his body and his future, and help him grow in skill, strength of character, and joy as he uses what You have given him. Lead him and help him trust Your good care for him each step of the way. In Jesus' name, amen.
