The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and there is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ. Not only is His fruit sweet and nourishing, but the very leaves, the least things about Him, are full of healing virtue. These healing leaves change the life blood, affect the spirits, and make the nature other than it was before. Has He not begun to heal us, and will not the healing virtue which His grace has infused into us work us health and cure till we shall be without spot or wrinkle? His salvation will also perfectly heal our bodies.
A friend loves at all times, and there is a Friend that sticketh closer than a brother. That Friend is Jesus, the sinner’s Friend, who loved us before there was any time. When the sorrows of the body weigh heavy, when pain clings close as a garment, He does not forsake. He is a friend proved in the house of sorrow, a friend who gave His heart’s blood for you, and such a friend never can and never will forsake you. He still makes His love to dart with healing beams into the soul.
Healing and forgiveness are placed in happy conjunction. When the Sun of Righteousness rises with healing in His wings, the voice of pardon sounds alongside the work of cure. The poor man, in his helplessness, leaves his case in the hands of God, and God undertakes to care for him. Cast this burden of the shoulder, the tendon, the tear, the inflammation, upon Him who is the poor man’s Friend and the healer of all maladies. Commend this dear one, waking tomorrow, into the keeping of Jesus Christ for the whole of the day. Say, “My Lord, here is this frame which I commit to You; let Your healing virtue flow, and if the path lead through the surgeon’s hand or through the slow mending of time, yet let the inward healing be perfect, and let the soul be kept secretly in Your royal pavilion.”
Come, then, to this Friend of sinners, who does not cast out those who come to Him with their aches and their fears. He is your own Friend, and your father’s Friend, forsake Him not, but lean hard upon Him. He who forgave the sick of the palsy and made him rise and walk, says still to the sin-sick and the body-broken, “Be of good cheer.” Welcome to pardon and healing through our Lord Jesus. The Lord deal gently with your friend, and with you, and bring you both at last to that land where yonder faces, fresher than newborn babes, owe their freshness to these healing leaves, and where none shall say, “I am sick.”
