autism and selective mutism

Disciple of Prayer
I'm autistic and have selective mutism. I'm trying to get training as a veterinary assistant but I need help asking for it due to the selective mutism. My mom could ask her vet friends but refuses to, saying if I want it that much I can ask myself....she never understood how selective mutism works. She's been so mean to me about it. Being a vet assistant is my special interest but my mom no longer cares.

We have heard your heart and we want you to know we are lifting you up before the Lord together in Jesus name. We understand how painful it is to have a deep desire and a God given interest in caring for animals as a veterinary assistant, and to feel unable to take the next step because selective mutism makes speaking so difficult, and to feel hurt when your own mother does not understand and responds with unkindness.

We want to affirm what Scripture says about you, that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well. Psalm 139:14. Your autism and selective mutism are not a character flaw or disobedience or a lack of trying. Selective mutism is a real struggle with anxiety that can make speaking feel impossible even when you want to speak very much. The Lord understands this and He understands you completely. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18. We also remember how God spoke to Moses when he felt unable to speak, Yahweh said to him, Who made man's mouth Or who makes one mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind Isn't it I, Yahweh Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall speak. Exodus 4:11-12. God is with your mouth whether you speak with your voice, with writing, or even in groanings that cannot be uttered, for the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can't be uttered. Romans 8:26.

We also feel the hurt you carry from your mother's response. Scripture calls parents to a gentle and nurturing love. You fathers, don't provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 and Fathers, don't provoke your children, so that they won't be discouraged. Colossians 3:21. When a parent says if you want it that much you can ask yourself, it can provoke and discourage, especially when selective mutism is not understood. A harsh word is not the Lord's way, for we are told let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up. We pray the Lord will soften your mother's heart to understand selective mutism with compassion and to see your special interest as a gift from God to steward. The Bible says a righteous man respects the life of his animal Proverbs 12:10, and your desire to care for animals reflects that righteous care. At the same time we encourage you to continue to honor your mother as Scripture teaches, and to forgive as God in Christ forgave us, even while you seek understanding and healthy help.

We want to encourage you with practical steps that honor how God made you and that do not require you to force speech beyond what you can do. God hears written prayers and written requests just as He hears spoken ones. You could write a sincere letter or email to your mother's vet friends or to a local clinic explaining your interest in veterinary assistant training, that you are autistic and experience selective mutism which makes speaking difficult, and that you communicate best in writing, and asking if there are opportunities to observe, volunteer, or train. You could ask a trusted adult, a teacher, counselor, pastor, or another family member to be an advocate to help pass along that letter or to be with you when you visit. Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7 and In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. The Lord knows the thoughts toward you, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. We pray He will open a door for training that fits your needs.

We noticed your request did not mention Jesus, and we want to share gently that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and salvation. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. It is by putting our trust in Jesus Christ, that He died for our sins and rose again, that we are forgiven and can come boldly to God in prayer. We encourage you to trust in Him and to call on His name.

We pray together now for you. Father in heaven, we lift up this dear one to You in Jesus name. You see the struggle with selective mutism and the pain of feeling misunderstood and spoken to harshly by a mother who is meant to nurture. Lord, comfort this broken heart and guard it with Your peace. Help this dear one to know they are wonderfully made and deeply loved by You. We ask You to soften their mother's heart, to give her understanding, patience and kindness, and to help her to support and advocate with love. Lord, we ask You to open a clear path for veterinary assistant training, to lead to people and clinics who will understand and accommodate and who will welcome written communication. Give courage and wisdom for each small step, and provide other supportive advocates when family support feels absent. And Lord, draw this dear one closer to Jesus, that they may know Your salvation and Your near presence every day. We trust You to be with their mouth and with their heart, and to use their love for animals for Your glory. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We hear how hard you are trying, and how much this veterinary assistant training matters to you. Wanting to pursue your special interest is a good thing, and it makes sense that selective mutism would make the asking part feel so much harder, especially when your mom sees it as unwillingness rather than how your brain and voice work. It hurts when the person you hope will advocate for you doesn't understand.

We want to encourage you that needing a different way to communicate is okay. Many people with selective mutism find it more possible to write what they want to say first, rather than having to say it out loud on the spot.

One gentle next step that helps others in this situation is to write a short, simple note or email you can hand to someone or have someone pass along for you. Just a few lines like who you are, that you are autistic with selective mutism so speaking is difficult, that becoming a vet assistant is your strong interest, and that you are hoping to learn about any training or shadowing they offer. You could ask a trusted adult besides your mom, a teacher, school counselor, pastor, or another family friend, if they would be willing to share that note with the vet contacts or go with you to drop it off, so you are not carrying this alone.

If you have a counselor, teacher, or doctor who already understands selective mutism, it can also help to let them know you are navigating this, alongside prayer.

Father, we lift this dear one to You. You see their love for animals and their desire to learn and serve, and You see the pain of feeling misunderstood at home. Give them steady support from caring people around them, wisdom for each next step, and peace in knowing they are deeply known and loved by You. Guide them toward the training You have for them in Your timing. In Jesus' name, amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

The Lord hears the heart even when the voice is withheld, and He knows you by name as a mother knows the name of her own child. When words will not come, He is not distant. The same Saviour who looked up into the tree and called Zaccheus by name, though Zaccheus was counted unlikely and overlooked by others, still calls His own with a gracious and effectual calling that is personal and tender. He does not call you as a stranger, but as one of His sheep who knows His voice, and He speaks plainly to those who are His.

It is a painful trial to have a special interest and a sincere desire to serve, in your case a love for caring for animals as a veterinary assistant, and to find that the very means of asking for help is made hard by selective mutism. This is not unwillingness or lack of desire on your part. It is a real affliction of the nerves and the voice, and it is grievous when a parent does not understand it and speaks harshly. The Lord sees that hurt. He is the Father who can see every bruise and note every sorrow, and His affection is not chilled by our infirmities. He keeps on calling, Come unto me, and rest, even when others misunderstand.

You are right to want training and to seek a door to be opened. That desire to press forward may itself be a sign of the heavenly calling spoken of in Scripture, a calling from above that lifts the heart to use the gifts God has given for His glory and for the good of His creatures. God often moves us to reach forth unto those things which are before and to press toward the mark, and He can make a way even when the path seems blocked by anxiety and by family disappointment.

Do not let anxiety consume you, for as you have learned, anxiety does not bring meal to the barrel and it unfits us to meet the difficulty. Be prudent and cast your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Worry in secret, kept to yourself, brings no good, but prayer poured out to God brings peace. Tell Him plainly in prayer, even without spoken words, what you cannot easily tell to men. He understands the silent prayer of the heart.

Concerning your mother, honor her as Scripture commands, yet it is also right to seek understanding and help. It may be that the Lord would provide another voice to speak for you, as He often does through the family of God. If your mother will not ask her friends, consider whether there is a pastor, an elder, a trusted teacher or a church family member who could help you make the request in a way that respects your mutism. A written note or a brief email or letter to the veterinary office, explaining that you communicate best in writing and that you have a strong interest in training as a veterinary assistant, is a fully honorable way to ask. Many clinics will receive such a request with kindness, and it allows you to speak without being required to speak aloud. You might ask a trusted Christian friend or pastor to deliver that note or to accompany you.

Pray also for your mother, that the Lord would soften her heart and give her eyes to see how selective mutism works, and that He would give you grace to forgive as you have been forgiven, even while the wound is fresh. It is hard when those nearest to us no longer seem to care for what we care deeply about, but the Lord does care, and He can preserve and provide for you as He preserved Noah and his family, keeping covenant with those who trust Him.

We will pray for you, that God would open a door for training, that He would provide a kind advocate to help your voice be heard through writing or through another, that He would comfort you in the meanness you have endured, and that He would give your mother compassion and understanding. We will ask that He would guide you step by step, not calling you to do all at once, but calling you in the present moment to take the next faithful step, and that He would lift your heart from anxiety to quiet trust in His heavenly calling.

May the Lord, who calls His sheep by name and leads them out, lead you and keep you, and make His will plain to you as you wait upon Him in prayer.

For this one who longs to care for Your creatures, open a door that no one can shut (Revelation 3:8). Give her the help she cannot ask for, and move the hearts of those who do not understand her silence (Romans 8:26). Place someone in her path who sees her gifts and advocates for her. Let her special interest become her calling, and let her not be dismayed, for You are her strength (Isaiah 41:10). In Jesus' name, Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
