Attack me for no reason

I don't like being attacked for no reason because I don't know where that comes from.

We hear your pain and frustration, and we stand with you in seeking God’s protection and peace. Being attacked without cause is deeply unsettling, and it’s understandable that you would feel confused and hurt by such treatment. The Bible tells us in Psalm 37:14-15, "The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, to kill those who are upright in the way. Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken." Even when others act unjustly, God sees and will ultimately bring justice.

We must also examine our own hearts, as Scripture warns us in Matthew 7:3-5, "Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but don’t consider the beam that is in your own eye? Or how will you tell your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye,’ and behold, the beam is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother’s eye." While this doesn’t excuse the attacker’s behavior, it’s important to ask the Lord to reveal if there’s any offense or misunderstanding on your part that may have contributed to the conflict. If not, we can trust that God will defend you, as He promises in Psalm 118:6, "The Lord is on my side. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"

We also want to gently address the way this request was framed. While your pain is valid, we noticed that the name of Jesus was not mentioned. It is only through Him that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and there is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If you haven’t already, we encourage you to place your trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. He is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) and the One who calms the storms in our lives. Without Him, we have no true defense against the schemes of the enemy.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this dear one who is feeling attacked and confused. Lord, You are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). We ask that You would surround them with Your protection and peace. Shield their heart and mind from the arrows of the enemy, and let no weapon formed against them prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Father, if there is any unforgiveness, bitterness, or offense in their heart, reveal it to them so they may release it to You. If they do not yet know You as their Savior, we pray that they would surrender their life to Jesus Christ, the only One who can save and defend them.

Lord, we rebuke any spirit of confusion, strife, or division that may be at work in this situation. We declare that no weapon formed against Your child shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against them in judgment, You will condemn (Isaiah 54:17). Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may walk in love, patience, and wisdom. Help them to respond to their attackers with grace, even as Jesus did when He was reviled (1 Peter 2:23). May Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

We also pray for the one who is attacking them. Soften their heart, Lord, and reveal Your truth to them. If they are acting out of hurt, bitterness, or spiritual blindness, we ask that You would heal and restore them. Let Your light shine in the darkness, and may they come to know You as their Savior and Lord.

In all things, we trust in You, Father. We declare that You are working all things together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose (Romans 8:28). Strengthen this dear one to stand firm in faith, knowing that You are their defender. We thank You for Your faithfulness and love, and we ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

We encourage you to draw near to God in this time. Spend time in His Word, for it is a lamp to your feet and a light to your path (Psalm 119:105). Surround yourself with fellow believers who can pray with you and offer godly counsel. Remember, the enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that you may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). Stand firm in your faith, and do not be afraid. God is with you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).

We understand how painful and disorienting it is to feel attacked without any clear reason. When hostility seems to come out of nowhere, it can leave us confused, looking over our shoulder, and wondering what we missed. That kind of experience can make the world feel unsafe, and we just want you to know that we hear the real distress in what you've shared.

When we face unexplained attack, it can be easy to get tangled up trying to figure out the "why" behind it. Sometimes there simply isn't a reason that makes sense to us, and that's okay. What matters most is where we place our feet in the midst of it. One thing that helps many of us is to do a quiet, honest check-in with ourselves, not to blame ourselves for being attacked, but to see if there is any old wound, unconfessed pattern, or area of vulnerability we might be ignoring. Attacks against our mind or spirit can find a foothold through things we've left unaddressed, even small things. Bringing those into the light together with someone we trust can close doors we didn't realize were open.

You do not have to face this alone. We would encourage you to ask one trusted, mature believer to simply pray with you about what you are experiencing, not to analyze it or turn it into a big production, but just to stand with you in prayer. There is real strength when even two people agree together before the Lord.

Lord Jesus, we lift up this precious person right now. You see the attacks that have come against them, and You know the source. We ask You to surround them with Your protection, give them clarity of spirit, and settle their heart when confusion rushes in. Grant them the courage to examine anything in their own life honestly and without fear, and bring the right person alongside them to pray. In Your mighty name, Amen.

You speak of being attacked for no reason, and the sting of it is sharp because you cannot trace its source. Yet consider whether this very trouble might be sent not as an attack to destroy you, but as a wave to speed your course. Persecution in the church, even when it takes the form of slander, of cruel mockings, jesting, jeering, and venomous spite, in whatever form it is sent, helps to keep up the separation between the church and the world. And this persecution, dear friend, has a further usefulness. Often does it happen that the enmity of the world drives the Christian nearer to his God. How many prayers have been offered up as the result of persecution that would never have been offered else, heaven alone can tell! God has blessed the church by her persecution.

But I detect a deeper trouble in your words. You say you do not know where the attack comes from. Let me tell you plainly: our greatest enemy is not outside us but within. The worst assaults arise from our own unbelief and our restless seeking after peace in the wrong places. The seeking sinner is disobedient to the command. He is going about here and there seeking, but he declines trusting. He is eagerly looking abroad for that which is at home. He is seeking for peace afar off when it is near him. You feel attacked, but have you considered that your own heart, still at war with God through unconfessed sin, may be the wellspring of your turmoil? Supposing that with confusion of face, contrition of heart and awakened conscience we admit and acknowledge our inexcusable guilt, the next thing requisite to our peace is that we should admit the justice of the Divine sentence and revere, instead of reviling, the Judge of all the earth.

The remedy for every attack, whether from without or within, is to cease from self-righteous seeking and to trust in Jesus Christ alone. Christ died, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. He was made a curse for us: as it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangs on a tree. The greatest of all works, the most Godlike work, is to leave off self-righteous seeking, and trust in Jesus. If you want comfort this morning, go to Christ. Sitting where you are, if you can trust the Son of God with your soul, the thing is done. Seek you first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things, including the peace you long for amid unjust attacks, shall be added unto you. There is a resurrection both for the just and the unjust; let that solemn truth awake you to flee from the wrath to come and lay hold of eternal life.

You speak of being attacked for no reason. This is a bitter cup indeed, for the soul longs to know why it suffers, and when the blow comes without cause, the confusion cuts deeper than the wound. Yet consider this: when men assail you unjustly, they often act as those who themselves know not the Law they claim to uphold. Their attack does not arise from your fault but from their own sickness. Remember the words of our Lord, that before His coming the world was eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until sudden destruction fell upon them in their false peace. So too, those who live in luxury of soul, at ease in their sins, will often lash out at the righteous. Their attack is not truly without reason, for it springs from the malice of the evil one who hates all who seek peace with God.

But I would have you look inward as well. Why does this trouble you so? Is there a beam in your own eye that makes the mote of another’s malice seem larger than it is? If you are blameless in the matter, then rejoice that you suffer as our Master suffered, who was reviled and did not revile in return. The physician cuts away the diseased flesh to save the body, and so God may permit these trials to sever you from any love of the world’s approval. This is the true peace: not the world’s peace, which often brings only a foolish agreement among robbers, but the peace Christ gives, peace with God and with one another in holiness.

Do not be surprised when such attacks come, as though a strange thing were happening. In this time of apparent peace, we must keep the exercises of spiritual war, blessing those who curse us, praying for those who despitefully use us. For if we are not trained in these lesser fights when no danger presses, how shall we endure the greater assaults? Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord. If you return good for evil, you heap coals of fire on their heads, and you secure your own soul in safety, for the God of peace will be with you.

What you are describing sounds deeply unsettling. When an attack comes with no clear reason, it leaves you bewildered and vulnerable because you cannot trace its origin. Right away, the most important thing is to recognize that this is not random hostility; it is a deliberate attempt by the enemy to stir up fear and discouragement in your heart. His whole aim is to get you to react out of that fear, because fear and faith cannot occupy the same space. Where fear takes hold, faith is driven out, and you can easily be moved into unwise actions just to find relief.

The cure is not to analyze the attacker but to remember the Lord. David walked through the valley of the shadow of death and still declared he would fear no evil. His confidence wasn’t in his circumstances but in the presence of the Shepherd with him. So right now, refuse to let your eyes fix on the threat. Instead, lift them higher. The fear that is trying to grip you is a phobia type of reaction, but the scripture speaks of a different fear, the fear of the Lord, which means hating evil and trusting His wisdom. That fear drives out the phobia because it anchors you to something solid.

Peace is what your heart is really crying out for. But peace is not just the absence of attack; it is a person. Peace with God comes only through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who made peace by his blood. If you have settled that, then you have the foundation. From there, the peace of God becomes your present experience. The promise is that he will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on him. Not a passing glance, but a steady, fixed gaze upon his character and his control over every situation. When your mind is set there, he rises up as your light and your salvation. You can then face the chaos and say, "Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"

Do not let this sudden rush of dread move you. The enemy desired to make Nehemiah run and hide in fear, but Nehemiah stood firm because he remembered the Lord and refused to act out of panic. The Lord is your confidence in this exact moment. He will not let your foot slip. Fear not. Peace be unto you. Be strong, for he himself is your strength. Receive that peace right now.
