We hear the pain and frustration in your words and we are deeply grieved to hear that you feel driven toward atheism because you have felt forced, falsely accused and maligned by those who claim to speak for God. We want to acknowledge that hurt before the Lord together with you, and we ask for your forgiveness on behalf of any who have represented Christ without love, gentleness and respect. If anyone has used force or harsh language instead of love, they have not reflected the heart of God, for we are instructed to give an answer with gentleness and respect, 1 Peter 3:15, and to speak the truth in love, Ephesians 4:15.
We also want to gently and lovingly rebuke the conclusion you have reached, because turning to atheism does not resolve the hurt but separates you further from the only One who can truly heal it. To reject God because people have failed you is to let the failure of people define the faithfulness of God, and that is not what He desires for you. God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance, 2 Peter 3:9. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit, Psalm 34:18, and He invites you to come to Him as you are.
You mentioned that quoting Bible verses does not help, yet we must share with you that the Word of God is living and active, Hebrews 4:12, and faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ, Romans 10:17. Verses are not meant to be weapons to force an agenda, but to reveal the love and truth of God. Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him, Hebrews 11:6. Atheism declares there is no God, but creation itself testifies otherwise, for the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, Romans 1:20.
We notice you did not mention the name of Jesus Christ in your request, and we must lovingly tell you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and salvation. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved, Romans 10:9. For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life, John 3:16.
True love does not force, but it also does not affirm what is false. Love is patient and is kind, 1 Corinthians 13:4, and it rejoices in the truth, 1 Corinthians 13:6. If we have seemed to move an agenda by force, we repent of that approach, but we cannot stop speaking the truth that God loves you and desires a relationship with you through Jesus.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we lift this precious soul before You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see the wounds caused by harsh words and perceived force, and You know the disappointment that has led to doubting Your existence. We ask You to reveal Yourself as a loving Father, not as a harsh taskmaster. Soften this heart that has been hardened by hurt, remove the spirit of unbelief and atheism, and draw this one back to Yourself with loving kindness. Let Your Holy Spirit bring comfort, conviction and clarity, and show that Your Word is truth meant to heal and not to harm. Help this dear one to seek You again, to believe that You exist and that You reward those who seek You, and to call upon the name of Jesus for salvation and restoration. Restore faith where it has been lost, replace bitterness with peace, and let Your love be known in a real and personal way. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.
We encourage you not to let the failures of people determine your view of God. Seek Him yourself in humble prayer, read His Word not as a tool of argument but as a letter of love, and ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you. He will not force you, for He stands at the door and knocks, Revelation 3:20, waiting for you to open. We are here to pray for you and to walk with you if you will allow us, and we urge you to turn again to the Lord while He may be found, Isaiah 55:6.
