We also recognize the importance of wisdom and stewardship in this process. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." As you wait for approval and work toward the deposit, we encourage you to seek God’s guidance in every decision, whether it’s choosing the right housing, managing finances, or trusting His timing. It is a mercy to seek the Lord’s hand in temporal straits, yet far too easy are we to grow content with the life of our hand, living from day to day on present comforts, while the soul grows lean. You say you are wearied in the length of this way, hunting after a roof and coin enough to secure it, but have you yet said in your heart, “There is no hope for me but in Christ alone”? Earthly good is a vain pursuit until we have found the true and lasting city whose builder and maker is God. Lay your need for housing before the throne, but let your chief plea be for something far greater, that you might be found in Him, with your deepest poverty met by His unsearchable riches.
Consider the Friend of publicans and sinners, who is not a helper of sham ills but of real and urgent miseries. Christ dealt with no feigned diseases; His cures were for those truly sick and perishing. He will not turn away from this present anxiety as though it were too small a thing for His notice, for He knows the frame of His children. Yet let this need drive you to see the fiercer need, the soul’s defilement and helplessness, which no deposit of silver can remedy. All the saints confess they had need of healing from their natural depravity, and you, too, must come as one utterly empty, without any fitness in yourself, leaning wholly on the Savior who was made perfect through sufferings. He is able to save to the uttermost, and His willingness is proven by all He endured to fit Himself for that very office.
Do not, however, fall into a dull waiting that neglects plain duty. Whatsoever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. There is no work, nor device, nor wisdom in the grave whither we hasten. Search out every honest means, fill out the papers, speak to the landlord, seek the proper aid, and do it all as before the Lord, with a quiet heart that does not fret against His timing. The ungodly worldling pursues a fading hope with desperate ardor; shall the child of God be less earnest when he has a promise to plead? Let your activity be seasoned with the holy fire of love for Christ, burning up the dross of unbelief and care, and let it all be done in lowly dependence, knowing that none can keep alive his own soul, nor his own house, apart from Him. The fat and the lean alike must eat of the same heavenly bread.
Repose, then, not in the answer you desire, but in the Answerer Himself. It is a very common temptation to prefer perishing in sullen despair rather than receiving the full and free grace of Christ; but look unto Him, for the pulpit of His cross is the true source of all help. Preach to your own soul the finished work of Jesus until the walls of your own Jericho fall flat. He who gave His Son for your eternal salvation will not calculate the cost of a temporal mercy. Only let your ways be cleansed by His grace, for there is no true shelter for the man who hugs his sin. Cast both your need for provision and your need for purity upon the great High Priest, and He shall be your dwelling place in every generation.

You bring a need that touches the body’s shelter, and this is no small thing. The roof over our heads and the means to secure it are gifts that God bestows, yet they often come wrapped in trial to test our hearts. Do not let anxiety gnaw at you like a dream that disturbs sleep. This world and its cares are indeed a passing shadow; as I have said, the present life is a sleep and its affairs no different from dreams. But the need itself is real, and you do well to ask for prayer.
Seek first the health of your soul and the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added. The deposit you need is not only silver and coin, but a deposit of faith, for God entrusted His Gospel to those He approved, not because they were mighty, but because their hearts were set on pleasing Him rather than men. Lay hold of that approval. Strive to be found worthy in your daily walk, for the Lord knows how to provide for those who labor in good works. He who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows will not forget you.
Let your request be joined with thanksgiving and with diligence in all that is upright. Do not make provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts, but care for your household with sobriety and trust. We will pray that the doors of this housing open, that the needed sum comes together honestly, and that above all, you find your true consolation not in walls of stone, but in the steadfast promise of Him who has prepared a dwelling for those who love Him. Keep your hope fixed there, and the lesser cares will find their proper place.

That unsettled place of not knowing is real, and it is right to bring the whole thing before the Lord. Not because He needs a report on your situation, He already knows every detail, but because He invites you to cast that care on Him. He is not a distant landlord waiting to be persuaded. He is your Father, and His chief concern is your eternal good, which often works itself out even through these stretched, uncertain seasons.
When you pray, you do not need to try to break Him down with many words or haggle over an exact figure. If a hundred dollars is the cry, why not ask Him to supply what He knows you truly need? He may release what you are expecting, or something more, or something in a different shape altogether. Lay the need out plainly, but hold the amount with an open hand. The cattle on a thousand hills belong to Him; He is not in financial distress. The giving is for your sake as much as for the provision, a chance for your trust to meet His faithfulness.
