Ok another wrong thing I hear quite a bit from unsaved people is when someone's spouse dies then several months later the other one dies we'll meaning but misled survivors say they're with the other one in death.Uh excuse me but to my Biblical knowledge thats usually not so.The only way theyll reunite after death is if theyre both saved. If theyre both unsaved they probly wont see each other in hell and if one is saved and the other not they go in different directions.....correct.?So this "theyre together again"talk Id say is not accurate.

Posthumous Opportunity
There is no second chance after death so you must choose Christ now while the opportunity remains.
Alive or Dead - Which?
Possessing Christ by faith means you already have eternal life within you.
The Decoration of Graves
Honoring the fallen means embracing courage and self-sacrifice for the living to uphold.
We hear what you are saying and we share your concern for truth, and we agree that this common sentiment, though well meaning, is not biblically accurate and can actually give false comfort.

You are correct in your understanding. Scripture is clear that death is not a romantic reunion where everyone ends up together again regardless of their relationship with Christ. It is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment Hebrews 9:27. At death the soul goes immediately to be with the Lord if saved, or to await judgment if lost. To be absent from the body is to be at home with the Lord for the believer 2 Corinthians 5:8, but for the unbeliever it is a place of torment and separation. Jesus himself taught this in the account of the rich man and Lazarus, where Lazarus was carried to Abraham's bosom and the rich man was in torment, and a great gulf was fixed so that none could cross from one to the other Luke 16:22-26.

So if both husband and wife have truly believed on the Lord Jesus Christ and are saved, they will indeed be together again, but not as husband and wife. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven Matthew 22:30, and the woman who has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband Romans 7:2. Their reunion will be as brother and sister in Christ, together in the presence of the Lord forever, which is far greater than earthly marriage. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus 1 Thessalonians 4:14.

If both are unsaved, they will not be together in any comforting sense. Hell is not a place of fellowship or reunion, it is a place of outer darkness, isolation, and punishment. And if one is saved and the other is lost, they will be eternally separated, one in the presence of Christ and one separated from Him. This is why Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6, and that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. There is no other way to be reunited in glory except through faith in Him.

We want to rebuke this sentimental error with love, because it minimizes the urgency of the gospel. To tell a grieving family they are together again regardless of faith is to imply that repentance and faith in Christ do not matter, when in fact they are everything. We must speak the truth in love, with compassion for those who grieve, understanding their sorrow, yet not affirming what God has not promised. We also remember that we cannot see the heart as God does, and we leave final judgment to Him, but we know His standard is perfect and His Word is true.

We pray together for you and for all who hear this kind of talk. Father in heaven, we thank You for Your truth and for Your mercy. We ask that You give us wisdom and compassion to comfort those who mourn without compromising Your Word. We pray for those who are grieving the loss of a spouse, that You would draw them to Yourself for true comfort and salvation while there is still time, for now is the day of salvation 2 Corinthians 6:2. We pray that the lost among us and among our loved ones would hear the gospel and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ before it is too late. Help us to share that hope clearly, that to be together forever in Your presence we must first be reconciled to You through the blood of Jesus. We ask this in the precious and only saving name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We hear what you are noticing, and we understand why it weighs on you. When someone says "they're together again" after a spouse dies, it usually comes from kindness and a deep longing for death not to be the end of love. But you are right to pause on it, because that comfort only holds true in Christ.

What Scripture shows us is that being together again is not automatic. Heaven is not a general reunion place for everyone who loved each other here, and hell is not a place where people find each other and carry on together. Our hope of being reunited after death rests on whether each person has trusted Jesus for salvation. That reality makes the well meaning phrase inaccurate, and it also makes the gospel so urgent while we are still here.

It can be hard to know what to do with that in the moment. When you hear it at a funeral or from a grieving friend, it is rarely the time for a correction. What has helped many of us is to quietly pray for the grieving person right then, and later, when there is room for a gentle conversation, to turn the longing for reunion toward the hope we do have in Jesus and the importance of turning to Him now.

Father, we thank You that You are truthful and merciful. Give our friend wisdom and gentleness to speak truth in love, and comfort those who grieve with real hope. Help us all to cherish the time You have given us to share Your grace with the people we love. In Jesus' name, amen.

You have judged rightly according to the Scriptures, and it is needful to speak the truth plainly though tenderly where sentiment would mislead.

There is a common and well meaning speech at the graveside, that the departed are together again, as if death itself were a reunion. But our Lord has taught us otherwise. I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven, but the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Heaven is not opened by death, nor by the affection of a marriage bond, but by grace through faith in Christ. There should be as much difference between the worldling and the Christian as between Hell and Heaven, between destruction and eternal life.

The only true reunion after death is in Christ. The Scripture speaks of the whole family in Heaven and earth, not two families nor a divided family, but one family gathered together in one, all things in Christ, both which are in Heaven and which are on earth. Those who are in Christ, whether they have fallen asleep or remain, are fellow citizens, and neither death nor Hell can erase a single name, for our citizenship is in Heaven. There we shall meet, and there we shall be happy for ever, but only because we have first been made one in Him.

If both are without Christ, there is no comfort in the thought of meeting in Hell. Hell is outer darkness, not a place of fellowship or love, and those cast there are not together in any blessed sense. If one is saved and the other is not, they go in different directions, as you have said, for what fellowship hath light with darkness. Heaven must be in us before we can be in Heaven, and being born from above we are the same persons that will be in Heaven. Without that new birth there is no entrance, though the grief of survivors may wish it otherwise.

And even for those who are both saved, we must not think of Heaven as a mere continuance of earthly marriage. In Heaven they are as the angels, yet they are truly one family, knowing and loving each other in a purer way than before, sitting down together in the kingdom with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. It is a true Heaven, with a true Christ, in true glory, and only those who know the Truth of His salvation shall dwell there.

That salvation is wholly of the Lord. It was His in the planning, His in the procuring by the precious blood of Christ, and His in the applying by the Spirit. Nothing whatsoever that man does can avail him towards his own salvation, but when a man comes in very deed to a knowledge of the truth, that man lost and Christ his Savior, he trusts Christ and he is there and then saved from the guilt of sin. The Word saith, Look unto me, and be ye saved, for beside Him there is none else. You who have really transgressed, you are the men and women for whom there is truth in God's salvation, but if there is no truth in your sinnership, there is to you no truth in Christ's salvation. There must be a real atonement believed and received.

Therefore let this correction lead not to coldness but to earnestness. While there is breath, there is hope. Let us plead with the living, that they may be comforted with true comfort, for this is our comfort in affliction, that His Word hath quickened us. Let us pray that the Lord would comfort hearts and establish them in every good word and work, and that many yet from east and west may come and sit down in the kingdom, that what death has divided for a season may be gathered in Christ for eternity.

You are right to test what you hear by Scripture, and what you have described is correct. The comfort people offer when they say the departed are together again is well meaning but it is not true apart from Christ. Scripture teaches that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and that where we spend eternity is decided in this life.

If two people both belong to Christ, death does not end their fellowship, for to be with Christ is to be together with all who are in Him. But if both die without Christ there is no joyful reunion, for hell is not a place of fellowship but of judgment and separation. And if one is saved and the other is not, Jesus Himself teaches that a great gulf is fixed between them so that no one can pass from one side to the other. Luke chapter sixteen shows this plainly, and it is why we must not offer a false hope that all are together in death.

This is why grief without truth is so heavy, and why God has given us His word as medicine for the soul. When grief comes, dive into the Scriptures as into a chest of medicines and keep them in your mind. Take the Gospels, the Acts and the Epistles as your constant teachers and take comfort from them. There you will find that salvation is near and simple, that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved. That short word carries both forgiveness and righteousness.

Now is the acceptable time, now is the day of salvation, and we should not put it off to our last breath. While there is time let us grieve with godly sorrow that leads to repentance, let us weep for those who do not yet know Christ, and let us speak to them plainly and lovingly while God still grants opportunity. True comfort does not come from pretending that all are together, but from knowing that in Christ we have a hope that will not disappoint, and from urging those we love to be reconciled to God before death comes.
