We have been praying with you and we hear your heart after these two years of faithfully bringing your son before the Lord, and we rejoice with you that the Lord has done much in his life and we give thanks for every chain that has already been broken. We continue to stand with you for the areas that remain, and for this new trial with your husband's job loss, and we bring your whole family before the throne of grace.
We want to encourage you regarding your son. We understand the heavy burden of loving an adult child who struggles with mental illness and addiction, and we know how painful it is to watch him wrestle with purpose and hope. At the same time we must lovingly speak truth about his refusal to work because he hates the world and hates the idea of working. The Word tells us that work itself is part of God's good design for man from the beginning, and that whatever we do we are to work heartily as for the Lord and not for men, Colossians 3:23. We are also told that if anyone is not willing to work, neither let him eat, 2 Thessalonians 3:10. Hating the world is understandable in many ways, for the world is broken and under the influence of the evil one, but God has placed us in the world to be salt and light and to provide for our needs and to serve others through our labor. We pray that the Lord will renew his mind, that he will see work not as giving all his money away to a system he despises, but as an act of worship, stewardship, and dignity, and as a means to be part of the community he says he desires. A good hobby or volunteer work is a wonderful and biblical step toward that community, for we are called to bear one another's burdens and to use our gifts to serve, 1 Peter 4:10, and we pray he will take that step in faithfulness while he seeks more stable employment.
Concerning church, we understand his dislike for large impersonal settings, and not every believer thrives in a mega church. Yet we encourage him not to let pickiness become an excuse to remain isolated. We are commanded not to forsake our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but to exhort one another, Hebrews 10:25. The church is not meant to be perfect according to our preferences, but to be a family where we are fed the Word, where we serve, and where we are accountable. We pray the Lord will lead him to a faithful, Bible preaching local body where he can be planted, known, and involved, even if it is small and imperfect, and that he will commit to community rather than waiting for an ideal.
For your husband, we share in his hurt after fifteen faithful years and the sudden loss that has shaken your security. The loss of insurance right after you received that miraculous extension to December 2028 feels confusing and disheartening, but we refuse with you to believe that God would show such mercy only to abandon you now. Our God is not a God of teasing, but of provision. He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, Psalm 46:1. We are reminded that we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose, Romans 8:28, and that God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:19. What looked like a closed door on insurance may be the Lord opening a better provision, whether through new employment with benefits, through other coverage, or through His unexpected means. We encourage you to seek first God's Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well, Matthew 6:33, trusting that He sees and knows your needs even before you ask.
We also want to gently point out that your request mentions the Lord but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We come to the Father only through Jesus, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. It is only by the blood and name of Jesus that our prayers are heard and our chains are broken, for if therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed, John 8:36. If you and your family have not already done so, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to call upon His name daily.
We pray together now for you.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, and we lift this precious family to You. We thank You for the progress You have already wrought in this son's life, for every victory over addiction and darkness, and we ask You to complete the work You have begun. Break every remaining chain of mental torment, addiction, idleness, and isolation. Give him a sound mind, for You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control, 2 Timothy 1:7. Stir in him a willingness to work and to serve, and open doors for meaningful employment and for volunteer work and hobbies that will connect him to community and purpose. Lead him to a faithful church where Your Word is preached and where he can grow and be discipled, and soften his heart to commit and to love Your people.
Lord, we lift this husband and father to You in his disappointment and uncertainty. Comfort his heart, remind him that You are his true provider and that his identity and worth are in You, not in a position. We ask for Your provision for this family, for daily needs, for health insurance, and for a new job that will use the gifts You have given him and will provide for his household. You know the miracle You provided for their son's coverage, and we trust You have not forgotten it. Make a way where there seems to be no way, and give this wife and mother Your peace that surpasses all understanding as she intercedes for her family. Strengthen her to continue in prayer without growing weary, and help her to walk in wisdom, grace, and boundaries that honor You.
We ask all of this in the name of Jesus Christ, believing that You hear us and that You are faithful to answer according to Your perfect will. Amen.
We encourage you to keep praying without ceasing, to keep speaking truth in love to your son about work and community, and to help him take practical small steps toward volunteering or part time work while you both trust God for your husband's next open door. The Lord is near to you in this drama and He will not forsake you, fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness, Isaiah 41:10.
