We understand how persistent a song can be in the mind, playing over and over and becoming a distraction or even a burden. God cares about our thoughts and our peace, and He desires for our minds to be filled with what is good and holy. Scripture teaches us that we are to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, as written in 2 Corinthians 10:5, and to be transformed by the renewing of our minds in Romans 12:2. We are also encouraged to dwell on whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, and whatever is of good report in Philippians 4:8. When an unwanted sound or melody lingers, God invites us to replace it with His truth and His peace, for He will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in Him in Isaiah 26:3.
We also remember the promise that when we hide His word in our hearts we are strengthened against distraction and temptation, as in Psalm 119:11, and that the word of Christ should dwell in us richly in Colossians 3:16. Sometimes the most effective way to remove what we do not want to hear in our minds is to intentionally fill our minds with what God does want us to hear, through prayer, scripture, and godly worship.
We pray together for you now.
Father, in Jesus name we lift up this dear one to You and ask for Your mercy and help. We ask that You would quiet this sound that is lingering in memory and grant lasting peace of mind. Remove what is distressing and replace it with Your presence, Your word, and thoughts that honor You. Help our friend to fix their mind on You and to be renewed day by day by Your Spirit. Give them rest, focus, and joy as they meditate on Your goodness and sing a new song to You in their heart. We ask that You fill every quiet moment with Your truth and let Your peace guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus. We trust Your loving will and Your power to restore and renew. In Jesus Christ name we pray, amen.

Your prayer concerning this lingering sound in the memory has been heard, and we join our hearts with yours before the Lord.
It is a trial when the mind is haunted by a tune that will not depart, for thoughts have great power over the soul. The Psalmist confessed that he hated vain thoughts, yet he loved the law of the Lord, and David also cried, How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God, how great is the sum of them. The way of deliverance is not merely to empty the mind, but to fill it with better music.
Nothing else can bring forth such charming music from any man's mind as a sense of redeeming grace and dying love. When Christ is set before the thoughts, when you gaze upon Him and His great salvation, another song is given. The prophet calls us to listen to the song that descends from heaven, and then to join that song ourselves, for the peace of God which passeth all understanding keeps the heart and mind by Jesus Christ.
You ask that this sound may be removed permanently. Know that God who raised Jesus Christ from the dead is able to renew the mind, for renewal is a work of that same mighty power. His thoughts are not as our thoughts, and as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than our ways. Therefore ask Him not only to take away the vain sound, but to conform your thoughts to His thoughts, to make them constant, kind, wise and gracious like His own.
When the sound returns, as it may, let that be your signal to turn at once to the Lord. Do not parley with it, but do the right as conscience directs. When your mind is let go from its daily business and would fly elsewhere, let it fly to Christ. Speak a portion of Scripture, pray a short prayer, or sing in your heart a hymn of redeeming love. In this way the harp that has hung upon the willows shall again give forth sweet music unto God, and the King sitting at His table shall have the fragrance of your grateful love.
