We join you in this humble and honest cry before our heavenly Father, and we thank you for bringing this burden to the Lord in the name of Jesus Christ, for it is only through Him that we have access to the throne of grace.

Your prayer echoes the very words of Scripture, where we are warned that outside the city of God are those who love and practice falsehood, Revelation 22:15. To love a lie is to cherish it in the heart, and to make a lie is to speak it with the mouth, and both grieve the Holy Spirit. We must speak plainly that lying in any form is sin and is contrary to the nature of God Himself. Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight, Proverbs 12:22. Our Lord Jesus said that the devil is a liar and the father of lies, John 8:44, and we are called to have no fellowship with the works of darkness but to walk as children of light.

We also hear your desire to turn from this, and that desire is itself evidence of God working in your heart to make you more like Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life, John 14:6. He calls us to put away falsehood and to speak truth each one with his neighbor, for we are members of one another, Ephesians 4:25, and to not lie to one another, seeing that we have put off the old man with his doings, Colossians 3:9.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, lifting up this dear one who longs to be delivered from loving and making lies. Lord, forgive where lies have been loved in thought or spoken in word, for we confess that all have sinned and fall short of Your glory. We thank You that if we confess our sins, You are faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, 1 John 1:9. Create in this heart a love for Your truth, for You desire truth in the inward parts, Psalm 51:6. Fill this one with Your Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of truth, that the mouth may speak what is true and the heart may delight in what is true. Guard the lips, set a watch before the mouth, and help to be quick to confess and turn away at the first temptation to deceive, to exaggerate, or to remain silent when truth should be spoken. Make this life a witness to the truth of Christ, that others may see integrity and give glory to You. Strengthen this dear one to walk in honesty even when it is costly, trusting that You honor those who honor You. We ask this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and our Truth. Amen.

We encourage you to continue in this daily surrender. When you are tempted, pause and pray and remember that God sees and will give you a way of escape. Hide His Word in your heart, be accountable to a mature Christian believer who will lovingly ask you to speak the truth, and be quick to repent and make things right when you stumble, for the blood of Jesus cleanses us. As you abide in Christ, He will make you free indeed, John 8:32, and your love for truth will grow stronger than any love for falsehood.

We are grateful you shared this honest prayer with us. Wanting to turn away from loving lies and choosing truth instead takes humility, and we are encouraged by your desire to walk more closely with Jesus.

Lying can become a habit before we even notice, often to avoid trouble or to be liked. Changing a habit like that usually helps to make it practical and specific rather than just trying harder in general.

One small step that may help this week is to pick the one situation where you are most tempted to shade the truth, write down a simple, clear commitment for that situation, and look at it each morning. Think ahead about what you will say instead when pressure comes, and at night take a minute to notice honestly how it went, thanking God for any progress and asking for help where you stumbled. Some people find it encouraging to mark each truthful day in a simple way, letting small gains build.

We are praying for you and standing with you as you seek to walk in truth.

Father, we lift our brother to You, thank You for his honest heart that wants to please You. Give him courage to love truth and strength to speak it even when it is hard, and fill him with Your grace and peace as he follows You. In Jesus name, amen.

Your prayer to be kept from loving and making lies is itself an evidence that the Lord is working truth in you, for His eyes are upon truthfulness and He both detects what is false and discovers and approves what is true.

Scripture asks, Are not Your eyes upon the truth, and it teaches us that God regards truthfulness alone in matters of religion, while all mere profession without it is not worthy of His notice. There is no plain path, no easy path, like that of downright truthfulness towards our fellow men, and there is no right path for eternity like that of downright honesty before the living God. He compasses your path and your lying down and is acquainted with all your ways, so nothing is hidden from Him, and that very knowledge should both humble us and draw us to walk openly before Him.

Lying is hateful to God and belongs to the old nature, but Christ is the Truth, and by His grace you may be delivered. Put away lying and speak every man truth with his neighbour, as it is written, for we are members one of another. This is not accomplished by resolve alone, but by being made new in Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you.

Take this to the Lord daily in confession when you have spoken falsely, and ask Him to keep your tongue. Abide close to Christ, who is your familiar Friend and Saviour, for next to living close to Him there is no better help against sin. Let the Word dwell in you richly, that your speech may be seasoned with truth, and watch over your heart, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. When temptation comes to shade the truth or to love a lie, remember that the Lord sees and that truthfulness is precious in His sight.

We join you in prayer.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You desire truth in the inward parts and that You look upon the truthful heart with favour. Forgive this Your servant for all loving and making of lies, cleanse through the blood of Jesus Christ Your Son, who alone is the way of salvation, and create a clean heart and a right spirit within. Teach Your servant to love what You love and to hate every false way, to speak the truth in love, and to walk in honesty before You and before men. Keep the lips from falsehood and grant strength to stand in integrity, that Your name may be honoured. In Jesus Christ's name we ask, Amen.
