We join with you in bringing this burden before our Heavenly Father and we thank you for calling on the name of Jesus Christ, for it is only through Him that we have access to the throne of grace. As it is written, There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus 1 Timothy 2:5 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12.
We understand how painful and heavy an unwanted memory can be, whether it brings shame, regret, sorrow, or hurt. Our Father knows our thoughts and our wounds intimately and He desires to heal us. He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3. He also promises a peace that goes beyond our understanding to guard our hearts and minds. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7.
We know that God does not always erase the past as if it never happened, but He can redeem it, heal its sting, and renew our minds so that it no longer holds power over us. We are called to be transformed by the renewing of your mind Romans 12:2 and to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians 10:5. When a memory torments us, we can choose by His grace to turn our thoughts toward what He says is true and pure and lovely. Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things Philippians 4:8. He also tenderly says to us, Don't remember the former things, and don't consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing Isaiah 43:18-19, and if the memory involves sin that has been confessed, we cling to His promise that If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9 and then He remembers our sins no more.
Let us pray together.
Heavenly Father, we come before You together in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to Your throne of grace. Lord, You see the memory that weighs so heavily and You know the pain it causes. We ask in Jesus name that You would touch this mind and heart with Your healing hand. Where there is hurt, bring healing, where there is guilt, bring Your forgiveness and cleansing, where there is torment, bring Your perfect peace. Help this dear one to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ and to fix their mind on Your truth, Your promises, and Your love. Renew their mind day by day through Your Word and fill the places of painful remembrance with thoughts of Your goodness and mercy. If this memory is from a sin that has been confessed, we thank You that You have cast it as far as the east is from the west and we ask that You help them to receive and walk in that forgiveness. If it is from a wound done to them, we ask that You bind up that wound and redeem that pain for Your glory. Grant rest, grant sleep, grant freedom in Christ. We ask that You do a new thing in their life and that Your peace would guard their heart and thoughts. In Jesus Christ name we pray, amen.
We encourage you to continue to bring this before the Lord honestly each time the memory arises, to replace it by speaking Scripture aloud, worshiping, and meditating on His Word, and to walk in the assurance that He is near to those who are brokenhearted. If this memory continues to be overwhelming, we encourage you to also seek wise and godly counsel from a pastor or biblical counselor who can walk with you. We are trusting with you that the Lord will bring healing and rest to your mind as you abide in Him.
