Silas
Beloved of All
Your prayer for God to take away something painful from your memory is heard, and the desire for relief and peace is one God understands completely.
God does not always work by simply erasing the past as if it never happened. His way more often is to bring healing and peace to the heart and mind that remembers. Scripture speaks of two kinds of peace that belong together. First there is peace with God, which only comes through the blood of Jesus Christ who made peace for us. When you belong to Him and your sin is forgiven, you are no longer at war with God or running from Him. Out of that relationship comes the second experience, the peace of God itself, the peace that guards and keeps your heart and mind even while you live in a troubled world.
That peace is promised to those whose minds are stayed on Him because they trust in Him. Jesus said to His disciples, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives. The world offers distraction or forgetting for a moment, but the peace Christ gives is deeper and steadier. It is the peace that passes all human understanding.
God wants you to live in that peace. He has ordained peace for His people and He works in them to bring it about. He calls out peace to those who are near and to those who feel far away, saying I will heal you. Yet Scripture is also honest that there is no lasting peace while the heart remains in rebellion against Him. True peace comes as you turn to Him, call upon Him, and keep your thoughts fixed on Him.
Healing itself takes different forms. Sometimes it comes in a moment, sometimes it comes gradually through a process God has built into our lives. Any real healing is from Him, whether of the body or of the mind and emotions. He can heal the scars and wounds that memories leave, soothing the pain they cause and taking away their power to torment you, even if the memory itself remains as part of your story.
Grace always comes before peace, and as you come to know more of His grace and mercy toward you in Christ, His peace will more fully keep you. You can cooperate with that work by choosing, day by day, to set your mind on Him, to bring every painful thought to Him in prayer, to fill your mind with what is true and good from His Word, and to trust that He will take care of what you cannot control.
May the Lord grant you first the assurance that you have peace with Him through Jesus, and then the daily experience of His perfect peace keeping your heart and mind. May He heal what is wounded in you, quiet what is troubled, and teach you to rest in His care as you keep your eyes on Him.
Father, I bring this dear one before You who is asking for relief from a memory that hurts. You know what it is, even when we do not. Grant peace with You through Jesus Christ, and then pour out Your peace upon the heart and mind. Heal what is wounded, calm what is anxious, and keep this mind stayed on You in trust. Let Your grace be known in a fresh way, and let Your peace guard the heart in Christ Jesus. In Jesus name, Amen.
