Your prayer has been heard and God understands the ache behind it, the desire not just to forget a name or a face but to be free from the pain that comes with remembering.

Scripture shows that Jesus heals, and that He still heals today. He cleansed the leper and then sent him to follow what the law required as a testimony that he was truly made clean. He healed Peter's mother in law so completely that she rose and served, He healed the servant of the centurion with a word, and He healed the woman who had suffered for years when she touched Him in faith. To her He said, your faith has made you whole, go in peace and be whole of your plague. That is what He wants for you, not only relief from a memory but wholeness and peace.

God does not always work by simply erasing the past as if it never happened. Often His healing is more like a surgery. A doctor may have to cut away what is diseased, and the cutting is painful and the recovery takes time, but the purpose is healing. In the same way the Lord may not remove every recollection instantly, but He can heal the wound that the memory carries so that it no longer has power over you. He can purify the heart that has been made unclean by hurt, disappointment, or sin, and bring the new freedom that comes when His miraculous power has touched a life.

When Jesus said to His disciples, let us pass over to the other side, He did not say let us go under. When the storm rose they were afraid and cried out, do you not care that we perish, but He rebuked the wind and asked them where their faith was. If He has said He will bring you over, you will not go under. Your part is to trust His word more than the storm of thoughts and feelings that rises within you. Faith looks to what He has said and rests there.

He also knows how easily we can be moved only by emotion. One man came to Him in great enthusiasm and said I will follow you wherever you go, but Jesus answered that foxes have holes and birds have nests, while He had nowhere to lay His head. He was not looking for a momentary impulse but for a settled trust. Bring your pain to Him honestly, but also bring your will and ask Him to lead you steadily, day by day.

The Lord loves you stubbornly and will not let you go. Even when we wander in our thoughts He draws us back to Himself. He can guide you gently if you will listen to His voice, though in His love He will also use painful processes if needed to keep you from going the wrong way. Do not be like a horse or mule that must be pulled with a painful bit, but yield to His leading willingly.

So we pray for you now that God will do His healing work in your mind and heart. May He lift the heaviness of these memories, take away tormenting thoughts, and renew your mind through His Word. May He teach you to bring every thought captive to Christ and to fill your mind with what is true and pure and good. Where there is sin that needs to be confessed, may you confess it and receive His cleansing. Where there is hurt that needs comfort, may you receive His compassion. And may you be able to go in peace, telling what great things the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you.

Heavenly Father, we ask in the name of Jesus Christ that You would touch this dear one who is asking for freedom. Heal the wound that these memories have left. Wash and purify the heart, quiet the mind, and give peace that passes understanding. Make whole what has been broken, and lead this life forward into Your purpose and Your joy. Amen.
