God calls us to steward our minds and to fill them with what honors Him. We understand the burden of a memory that lingers when you would rather be free from it, and the desire to have the thoughts cleansed and made quiet before God. The Scripture teaches us that our strength and our minds are not sufficient of themselves, for that which is merely our own will one day fail us, and the sin that dwells within drags us down. We have need therefore that the Lord Himself should renew us, and that the blood of Christ should cleanse us from all sin, even in the secret chambers of thought and memory.
The mind is not made clean by merely willing a thing to be forgotten, but by being filled with something holier and better. The prophet was told to let Jerusalem come into his mind, and so the believer is taught to let the heavenly Jerusalem, where Christ Himself is, come often into his thoughts. When the heart is occupied with Christ, with His Word and His presence, then vain and trifling images lose their hold and are displaced by that which is pure and eternal. As you wait upon the Lord, He will renew your strength and your mind, that you may be restored to a nobler tune, with more faith and more reliance upon Him.
