The words and melodies that replay in your mind can feel like chains, but they are not stronger than the name that has already broken every chain. When you cried out in Jesus’ name, you appealed to the One who took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses, and whose authority over unclean spirits left them begging not to be sent into the abyss. He has not changed. The power that commanded a legion to leave a tormented man is the same power at work for you right now.

It is not unusual for these oppressive memories to rise again. Scripture shows us that when an evil spirit leaves, it wanders through dry places seeking rest. If it returns and finds the house swept clean but empty, it brings more spirits with it, and the last state becomes worse than the first. So as you ask for deliverance, be equally intent on what will fill that space. That music once occupied your mind; now fill it with something that edifies. Whatever is pure, whatever is holy, whatever is worthy of praise, let those things be the new sound in your heart. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil. That godly hatred does not simply tolerate what is degrading and hope it stays away. It actively turns from it and delights in what is good.

Do not let your focus shift only to the demonic. The disciples once returned amazed that even the spirits were subject to them, but Jesus told them not to rejoice in that, but to rejoice that their names are written in the book of life. Your ultimate security is not in how dramatically you experience freedom, but in who holds your salvation. The forces that gathered against you hope to distract you with the memory of their noise, but you are not overcome by evil. Overcome evil with good. Let the words of Scripture, prayer, and songs that honor God replace the words and titles that once defiled you.

Be watchful about what you allow through your ears and mouth. Jesus taught that what comes out of the mouth can defile a person, out of the heart come blasphemies and evil thoughts. So actively choose what you listen to and what you speak. A radio or a device is not evil in itself, but it can become a channel for spiritual poison. Do not compromise with what pollutes; abhor what is evil and cling to what is righteous. If you are a child of God, He loves you too much to let you linger in what harms you. His discipline is not comfortable, but it leads to health for your body and marrow for your bones when you depart from evil.

Hold fast to this truth: greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. The same demonic forces that sought to inhabit you are already destined for the place of incarceration, the bottomless pit. You are not their property. The blood of Jesus has sealed your redemption, and no memory, no title, and no sound from the enemy can alter that. Every time those memories press in, treat them as a signal to fill your mouth with praise and your mind with the promises of God. As you do this day by day, the memory of that old music will lose its grip, not because you have only fought it, but because you have crowded it out with something infinitely better.
