How sweetly does this petition ascend, for intercessory prayer is the sweetest prayer God ever hears, after the similitude of Christ’s own pleading. You do well to lay this soul and those around him before the throne of grace, for salvation is altogether of grace, from first to last, and the Lord is moved by nothing but His own boundless mercy. None merits eternal life; it is the free gift of God, and the channel of that grace is Jesus Christ alone.
Plead earnestly, for intercessory prayer has stayed plagues and raised the dead, and who can tell how many souls it has instrumentally snatched from the pit? Perhaps the Lord is even now applying the rod of love to awaken them, for whom He loves He chastens, and every blow is a token of affection, not of wrath. Continue, then, in supplication, and expect that grace will triumph where works can do nothing. O to see the dead made alive by that same mighty wind which breathes upon the slain! Prayer is the most essential thing in turning sinners from the error of their ways, and it knits the hearts of the saints together in love. Keep knocking at mercy’s door, for it shall surely open.

You ask for salvation for one person and those in his life, yet do you bring a heart cleansed of wrath and resentment? For what hope of being heard has a man who makes intercession while clutching anger, like a wild beast? When you lift up hands in prayer, do so without doubting and without wrath. Lift up holy hands, or else your plea is nothing but a sword thrust into your own soul.
And if you truly desire salvation for another, you must know that the Lord Jesus ever lives to intercede for those who come to God through Him. He is able to save to the uttermost, because He dies no more and has no successor. His death was the very salvation of the world, and He desires that all should turn and be healed. He says, "Lest they should be converted, and I should heal them," not to harden them but to draw them, showing that conversion is possible and that He stands ready to heal. Yet do not think that prayer alone, without repentance and watchfulness, avails anything. How many plead for others while they themselves sleep? Even Paul needed the prayers of the Church, and he labored unceasingly. If you are on the alert, the prayer of the saints benefits you greatly, but if you sleep, even ten thousand prayers will profit nothing unless you rouse yourself. So when you pray for another's salvation, examine yourself: are you living as one already saved? Are you building up and not destroying the temple of God for the sake of trivial things?
Do not merely rattle off words, supposing you will be heard for much speaking. The widow prevailed by importunity, the friend at midnight by his boldness, yet both came with humility and need. So intercede continually, but do so with a heart that wants nothing but God's mercy, both for that person and for yourself.
