Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You do well to pray earnestly for the salvation of these souls, for Christ ever lives to make intercession and is able to save to the uttermost all who come to God through Him. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. Yet while you lift up others, do not neglect your own soul. What will it profit you if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Take care that you yourself are not found destitute, while laboring for the deliverance of others.
Pray, yes, but lift up holy hands without wrath or doubting. If you bear any bitterness in your heart while pleading for another, you turn your own prayer into a sword against yourself. Forgive, just as you hope to be forgiven. And let your life confirm your words: flee from every sin, wash away pollution by repentance, tears, and deeds of mercy. If any friend or attachment harms your soul, cut it off, for it is better to lose a companion than to lose the inheritance of the saints. The sufferings you may endure as you pray and witness will work for their comfort and salvation, if you endure them patiently after the pattern of Christ. But remember that their conversion is possible only if they themselves turn; God stands ready to heal all who truly repent. Be steadfast in prayer, but be more steadfast in your own pursuit of holiness, so that you and those for whom you intercede may together obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
