Annulling prayer which the cell group leader had prayed over me

Dexter2020

Good and Faithful Servant
I hereby annulled all prayer by my ex cell group leader who has prayed over me by saying that Project Manager is not suitable for me and due to this toxicity I will not return to church or his cell group.

We hear the pain and hurt in your words and we understand that you felt wounded and limited by what your cell group leader prayed over you regarding becoming a Project Manager, and that this has led you to make a vow not to return to church or to that cell group.

We want to gently correct the idea of annulling a prayer as if it were a spell or a curse that has power over you. A prayer offered to God, even if it was unwise or discouraging, does not control your future or bind you. God alone is sovereign over your life and your calling. No person can curse you through prayer when you belong to Christ, and no human opinion can cancel the plans God has for you. We are told in Jeremiah 29:11 that God knows the thoughts that He thinks toward us, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give us hope and a future. We are also taught to examine everything carefully and hold firmly to that which is good as in 1 Thessalonians 5:21, and that where there is no counsel, plans fail, but in a multitude of counselors they are established as in Proverbs 11:14 and Proverbs 15:22. One leader's opinion or prayer, even if well intentioned, is not the final word on your vocation. We encourage you to seek wisdom directly from the Lord, who gives wisdom generously to all who ask as in James 1:5, and to seek confirmation through scripture and through other mature believers.

We also must lovingly rebuke the vow you have made to not return to church or to fellowship because of this hurt. We understand feelings of toxicity and offense are real, but forsaking the assembly is not the biblical response to being hurt by a leader. We are exhorted in Hebrews 10:25 not to forsake our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but to exhort one another. Bitterness and unresolved offense can take root and defile many as in Hebrews 12:15. We are called to let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from us, with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave us as in Ephesians 4:31-32. If you felt your leader spoke harshly or beyond his wisdom, Jesus gives us a pattern in Matthew 18:15 to go and show the fault between you and him alone, seeking reconciliation. If that is not possible or wise, we encourage you to forgive him before the Lord and to find a healthy, Bible believing fellowship where you can be shepherded, rather than abandoning the church altogether. A vow made in hurt should be surrendered to God, for we are warned not to be hasty with our mouth or vows before God as in Ecclesiastes 5:4-5.

Regarding your career, whether God is calling you to be a Project Manager is between you and Him. We encourage you to commit your work to the Lord and He will establish your plans as in Proverbs 16:3, and to use the gifts God has given you faithfully for His glory as in Colossians 3:23.

We also notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved as in Acts 4:12, and Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, except through me as in John 14:6. It is by believing in Jesus, that He died for our sins and rose again, and confessing Him as Lord, that we are saved as in Romans 10:9. Any prayer we offer must be in His name and according to His will.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift up this dear one who has been hurt and discouraged by words spoken over their life. Lord, we ask You to heal the wound and remove all bitterness, anger and offense, and to help them to forgive as You have forgiven us. We ask that You break the power of any discouraging word and remind them that their future is in Your hands alone. Give them clear wisdom and guidance about their vocation, and open the doors that You want opened and close those that You want closed. Lead them to a faithful church family where they can be encouraged, taught the Word, and grow in fellowship, and help them not to forsake gathering with Your people. Draw them closer to Jesus, and let them know the peace that comes from trusting You fully. We ask this in Jesus name, amen.

We encourage you to release this hurt to the Lord, to forgive your former leader, to seek the Lord's direction for your career through prayer and scripture, and to return to fellowship with believers so you can be strengthened and encouraged in your walk with Christ.

Thank you for putting this into words. It makes sense you would want to draw a clear line after feeling spoken over in a way that felt controlling and discouraging, especially about your work and your place in church.

We want you to know a word spoken by a person, even a leader, does not have power over your future unless God gives it. You do not need a special formula to cancel it. You can simply bring it to the Lord honestly and leave it with Him, and keep seeking His direction for your gifts and calling as a Project Manager in peace.

Stepping back from a group that felt toxic can be a healthy boundary. It is understandable to need space. When you are ready, we hope you will have a safe community where your faith can be nurtured without pressure or manipulation, even if that looks different for a season.

One small next step that may help is to set aside some quiet time to tell God in your own words what was spoken over you, what hurt, and what you hope for vocationally, and then invite a trusted, mature believer outside that cell group to pray with you and listen with you, not to tell you what to do but to help you discern.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Heal the hurt left by these words, quiet any confusion, and restore trust in Your kind leading. Give wisdom about work and about church community, and surround them with gracious, safe people. Lead them step by step as they seek You. In Jesus name, amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

Your sorrow and the sting of those words have been heard, and they are brought before the Lord who alone searches the heart.

There is forgiveness with God, and there is healing with Him also. No prayer of man can bind you as with a spell, nor can any word spoken over you, however unwisely or harshly, fix your path apart from the will of your heavenly Father. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance, and He does not play fast and loose with His people. What a man has said concerning whether the work of a Project Manager is suitable for you must be weighed before the Lord, not as a final sentence upon your life, but as one man's judgment which may err. Commit your way unto the Lord, seek godly counsel, try your gifts with prayer and prudence, and let the Lord Himself establish or redirect your steps. The very least thing about Christ is healing, and His leaves are for the healing of His people.

You speak of annulling a prayer, but our comfort is not in a form of annulling, but in this, that the Lord hears according to His own perfect will and not according to the infirmity of our words. If an unwise word has been spoken, leave it with Him who judges righteously and who overrules all for good to them that love Him. You need not fear that you are held by another man's utterance, for forgiveness and guidance are with God through Jesus Christ His Son, and with no other.

Yet I must entreat you concerning the wound that remains. The Scripture saith, Even as Christ forgave you, so also do you. Christ forgave not a little, but fully, continuously, eternally, and He forgave you when you sought Him with a penitent heart. If you have received so great a forgiveness, let it be natural to you to open your hands to forgive. To cherish bitterness against your former leader, though his word felt as toxicity to your soul, will be a heavier burden to you than any word he spoke. Forgiveness is great minded, revenge is paltry, and the soul that has been much forgiven finds it sweet to forgive.

For that reason, do not let this hurt become a reason to go no more out to the house of God or to forsake the fellowship of His people. The Church should feel a peculiar care for the wounded and needy, and you have need of her means of grace, her preaching, her prayers, her communion. To withdraw is to deprive your own soul of the very healing you seek. If that particular cell group is not the place for you to grow, seek another faithful fellowship where the Word is honored, but do not vow to return no more to the assembly which Christ has purchased.

Let us pray together.

O gracious Father, with whom there is forgiveness, we bring this wounded child before Thee. Thou knowest the hurt caused by words spoken over this life and calling. We ask Thee to forgive all sin, to cover all infirmity with the blood of Christ, and to grant a full and free sense of pardon through faith in Him. Overrule every word not according to Thy will, and let no man's judgment stand where Thou hast not spoken. Give wisdom concerning daily work and vocation, whether in this path of a Project Manager or in another field where gifts may be used for Thy glory. Heal the memory of toxicity, soften the heart to forgive even as Christ has forgiven, and restore a love for Thy house and Thy people. Lead to a healthy, faithful congregation and to shepherds who will speak Thy Word with grace and truth. Keep this soul from despair and from the folly of forsaking Thy fellowship, and cause the Sun of Righteousness to rise with healing in His wings. In the name of Jesus Christ our only hope, Amen.
