Anger and resentment toward parent who only has selfish motives

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I told him many times I want to get married, and that I am afraid to be left alone when I grow old every time he laughs it off and he keeps on gaslighting me what if you meet a bad person snd brings up all the murder stories to make me think meeting someone is potential harm, I know his intention, he wants me not married so I can still carry his last name and potentially care for him but what about me? He does all these nice things so I don’t look for dating people. Just thinking of how selfish he is gives me and makes me the strongest anger and resentment toward and I am also afraid I won’t be able to find someone. Please pray that God brings the right person asap,

We hear the deep pain and frustration in your heart, and we stand with you before the Lord, lifting up your struggle in prayer. The way your parent has dismissed your desires, especially your godly desire for marriage, while manipulating your emotions is not only hurtful but contrary to the love and selflessness that God calls us to show one another. Scripture tells us, "Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil" (1 Corinthians 13:4-5 WEB). What you’ve described is the opposite of this kind of love, and it’s no wonder your heart is heavy with anger and fear.

First, we must address the sin of manipulation and selfishness in this situation. Your parent’s actions, gaslighting, instilling fear, and prioritizing their own desires over your well-being, are not of God. The Lord calls parents to nurture, protect, and encourage their children in the ways He has designed for them, not to control or stifle them. "Fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4 WEB). What you’re experiencing is not discipline or instruction; it’s a distortion of authority, and it grieves the heart of God. We rebuke this spirit of control and selfishness in Jesus’ name, and we pray that your parent’s heart would be softened to see the harm they’ve caused.

We also want to speak truth over your fear of being alone. The enemy would love for you to believe the lie that you’ll never find a godly spouse or that your worth is tied to your parent’s approval. But the Lord says, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11 WEB). Your Heavenly Father sees your longing for marriage, and He is able to provide a spouse who will love and cherish you as Christ loves the Church. We pray that He would open doors for you to meet a man of God who shares your faith, values, and commitment to a biblical marriage. Until then, we encourage you to seek fellowship with other believers, serve in your church, and trust that God’s timing is perfect.

Now, let us pray for you:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts on behalf of our sister. Lord, You see the pain, anger, and fear that have taken root in her spirit because of the selfishness and manipulation she has endured. We ask that You would break the chains of control in her life and replace her fear with Your perfect peace. Father, we rebuke the spirit of loneliness and despair that the enemy has tried to plant in her mind. Remind her daily that she is never alone, for You are with her always (Matthew 28:20).

Lord, we pray for her parent, that You would convict their heart and open their eyes to the harm they’ve caused. Soften their heart to repent and seek reconciliation in a way that honors You. Give our sister the strength to set boundaries where needed and the wisdom to navigate this relationship with grace and truth.

Father, we ask that You would bring the right man into her life, a godly husband who will love her as Christ loves the Church, lead her in righteousness, and cherish her as a gift from You. Prepare her heart for marriage, and prepare her future spouse’s heart as well. Until that day, fill her with Your joy, purpose, and assurance that You are her Provider and Protector.

We declare that no weapon formed against her shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we stand in agreement with her for breakthrough in every area of her life. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen."

In the meantime, we encourage you to seek godly counsel, perhaps from a pastor, mentor, or Christian counselor, who can help you navigate this relationship with your parent in a way that honors God. You are not responsible for your parent’s choices, but you are responsible for how you respond to them. Choose to walk in forgiveness, even when it’s hard, and trust that God will vindicate the wrongs done to you. "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord'" (Romans 12:19 WEB).

Lastly, we want to gently remind you that your hope is found in Jesus Christ alone. If you’ve never surrendered your life to Him, we urge you to do so today. He is the only one who can heal your heart, satisfy your deepest longings, and give you the future you desire. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16 WEB). Confess your sins, believe in Him, and receive the gift of salvation. He is faithful to complete the good work He has begun in you (Philippians 1:6).

We hear the weight behind your words, the ache of feeling dismissed, the frustration of being manipulated through fear, and the deep worry about a future alone. That mix of anger and resentment you're carrying is real, and it's telling you something important. Often anger flares up when our legitimate needs or fears are ignored, or when we sense that someone is using us rather than caring for us. Under all of it, you're not just angry; you're hurt that your own father won't see your heart, and you're afraid of what his control might cost you. Those are not small things, and we don't want you to feel you have to swallow them or let them fester.

We'd encourage you to bring this tangled knot of feelings honestly before the Lord, He already knows them anyway, and ask Him to guard your heart from bitterness while you sort through the pressure you're under. Because this situation is complicated, you may also find real relief in talking it through with a pastor or a mature Christian friend who can walk alongside you, not to take sides, but to help you see clearly and set loving yet firm boundaries. You are not dishonoring your father by wanting to follow a godly desire for marriage, and you don't have to let his fears or selfish motives write the story of your life. In the meantime, lean into authentic community in your church; loneliness loses some of its power when we are surrounded by brothers and sisters who show up.

Let's pray:

Father, we lift up our friend whose heart is heavy with anger, hurt, and fear. Quiet the storm within and bring Your clarity. Please soften this father's heart where selfishness has taken root, and give our friend the wisdom to navigate this tension with grace and courage. In Your perfect timing, open a door for a Christ-centered marriage that honors You. Until then, fill the lonely spaces with Your presence and the support of Your people. In Jesus' name we ask it, Amen.

I hear the ache in your words, a heart that longs for love met with cold laughter, a sincere desire twisted into something frightening. When one who ought to cheer you becomes the one who discourages you, it stings deeper than any wound from an enemy. You have been told that your longing for marriage is a danger, that opening your heart is foolish, and you see the selfish motive behind it. That is a bitter cup to drink, and I do not wonder that anger rises in you. Your Savior does not wonder either.

Consider Jesus, who knew what it was to be misunderstood by His own. When He faced the cross, His closest disciples slept while He wept alone. They fled when He needed a friend. He was slandered, misjudged, manipulated by those who should have stood beside Him. Yet He did not sin in His anger; He entrusted Himself to the One who judges righteously. That same Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father tonight, and He feels your sorrow with a sympathy that is real and present. He hears every sigh, every tear of frustration, every prayer whispered in the dark. You are not alone in your loneliness.

Your longing for marriage is not a thing to be ashamed of. The Lord Himself said it is not good for man to be alone, and He is the author of every pure affection. He knows your desire, and He is not unmoved. But remember, dear heart, that He who chose your eternal inheritance, writing your name in the Lamb’s book of life before the stars were kindled, will also choose every earthly blessing in the wisest way. He does not always send the answer at the pace we demand, but He never sends it too late. The right person, if God means marriage for you, will come not a moment sooner than perfect love appoints, and not a moment later than your truest need requires. In the meantime, the Lord Jesus Himself is the bridegroom of your soul, and no human companion can fill the place that belongs to Him alone.

Let the anger and the fear be poured out at His feet. He can bear it. Tell Him plainly, “Lord, I am afraid of being left alone. I am hurt by the selfishness of another. I am angry, and I don’t know how to let it go.” He will not turn away. And when you have emptied your heart before Him, listen for His gentle whisper: “Be strong, and fear not.” For your heavenly Father is not like the earthly parent who wounds you. He does not give gifts to manipulate; He gives because He is love. Cast this burden onto Him, and let Him be your defender, your provider, your peace. He can soften a hard heart, open a closed door, or fill your own heart so full of Himself that the ache becomes a quiet waiting.

Let us pray together:

Lord Jesus, You who were despised and rejected of men, come near to this dear sufferer. Shield her from the words that cut and the selfishness that entangles. Calm the storm within, and replace the anger with Your own patient love. You know her longing for a companion on the journey; if it be Your will, bring that one in Your own time, a true partner who will honor You and cherish her. Until that day, be her daily portion and her deep satisfaction. She trusts in You. Let her not be put to shame. In Your precious name, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

We are deeply moved by your honesty and vulnerability in sharing the pain and frustration you’ve been carrying in your heart. It is a heavy burden to feel unseen, dismissed, and even manipulated by someone who should be a source of love and support. We have lifted you up before the Lord, asking Him to heal the wounds of resentment and anger that have taken root within you. Father, we pray that You would soften this parent’s heart and open their eyes to the self-centeredness that has blinded them to your needs and desires. May Your truth break through the lies they have spoken, and may Your love replace the fear they have sown in your life.

We have also prayed for your heart, dear one, that You would guard it against bitterness and help you release the weight of these emotions into His hands. Lord, we ask that You would fill this space with Your peace, reminding you that Your worth is not defined by another’s expectations or limitations. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and Your future is held securely in Your Heavenly Father’s hands. We stand in agreement with you, believing that God will bring the right person into your life at the perfect time—someone who will cherish you, honor you, and walk with you in faith.

If the Lord has already begun to answer these prayers, we would love to rejoice with you and give Him the glory. If the struggle continues, please know that we are still here, ready to lift you up again in prayer. Keep seeking Him, trusting that He hears you, sees you, and is working on your behalf. May His presence comfort you, His wisdom guide you, and His love surround you as you walk this path.

We continue to pray for you in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
