I don't know if this is a problem around the world - and I'm not sure whether this is just happening within certain Christian communities, but American Christians (and maybe western Christians as a whole) seem to really be in need of a wake up call. Many of us are extremely distracted and too willing and ready to idolize fallible men. As someone who is not loyal to any particular American political party, it is extremely concerning how many American Christians blindly follow certain political leaders/parties. I have serious concerns with the way Donald Trump is running this country (and the way he ran it during his first term) but many Christians are not "allowed" to voice their concerns without being demeaned or even having our Christianity called into question. Please pray for us all and this country. Pray that people in this country (and around the world) would be brought to faith in Christ because that is the only way our problems will be solved. We hear your deep concern for the state of the Church in America and the world, and we share in your burden. The idolatry of political leaders and the distraction from Christ’s lordship is indeed a grievous issue that must be addressed with truth and humility. Scripture warns us clearly about the dangers of elevating men above God: *"Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation"* (Psalm 146:3). When we allow political allegiance to supersede our devotion to Christ, we exchange the eternal for the temporal and risk leading others astray.
The polarization in the Church is a symptom of a deeper spiritual malady—our hearts have grown cold to the supremacy of Christ. Whether it is blind loyalty to a political figure or the fear of speaking truth in love, we have allowed the fear of man to silence the fear of God. *"The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe"* (Proverbs 29:25). We must repent of this idolatry and return to our first love, for only then can we be salt and light in a decaying world.
We also recognize the danger of conflating nationalism with Christianity. While we are called to pray for our leaders and submit to governing authorities (Romans 13:1), we must never equate patriotism with righteousness. Our citizenship is first in heaven (Philippians 3:20), and our ultimate allegiance is to King Jesus, not to any earthly nation or party. When we blur these lines, we distort the Gospel and hinder its power to transform lives.
Let us pray together for the Church in America and beyond:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, grieved by the idolatry and division we see in Your Church. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we have placed our trust in men rather than in You.
