Silas
Beloved of All
Your simple cry, help me always, is one of the most biblical prayers anyone can pray. It comes from a true awareness of weakness and need. Scripture says, I am poor and needy, make haste to help me, O God. You are my help and my deliverer. That honesty is where help begins.
There is a difference between trying to help yourself and crying out for help from outside yourself. For a long time we try formulas and self improvement, asking how can I change, how can I do better. At the end of that road the apostle Paul stopped asking how can I help myself and cried out, who will deliver me. That is the turning point, when we stop saying I just need a little help and we say with full honesty, Lord, I cannot do this, I need You. God responds to that honest dependence.
Your help does not come from people or circumstances or your own strength. The psalm asks, from where does my help come, and then answers, my help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. If He is great enough to create all things, He is certainly great enough to care for what you are facing today. He is the One who keeps you, who does not slumber nor sleep, who will not let your foot be moved. The help of man is empty in comparison, but the Lord is a present help.
He also invites you to bring your faith as it is, even if it feels small. A father once cried to Jesus, Lord I believe, help my unbelief. That is still a good prayer. You do not need a large amount of faith, even faith as small as a mustard seed placed in a great God is enough, because the power is not in the size of your faith but in the One you trust.
The word of God is the way to test what you are hearing in your own heart. When you ask for His help, measure what comes to you by Scripture. Does it agree with His word. His way is not always the easy path of sparing yourself, but it is the way that leads to life and peace.
So keep praying this prayer. God hears those who cry to Him in distress and delivers them because His mercy endures forever. Pray with confidence that He is your helper always, not only in a crisis but each day, to strengthen you, to keep you, and to lead you in wisdom and righteousness.
Father, hear this honest cry for help always. You are the Maker of heaven and earth and You do not forsake those who trust You. Deliver, strengthen, and keep this dear one, forgive unbelief and increase faith, and guide every step according to Your word. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
