Your prayer is a very precious and needful one, and it lays hold upon the very heart of the gospel. To ask to be kept safe always, even when you die, and to be brought over to the better side, is to ask for that which God delights to give, but only in His own appointed way.
The Scriptures teach us that there is indeed a better side, and that to enter fully into our eternal inheritance we have only to cross the narrow stream of death. Yet heaven must be in us before we can be in heaven. Being born from above, we possess even now the divine life which shall enjoy eternal immortality, for he that believes on the Son has everlasting life as a present possession. There is no such gulf between earth and heaven as gloomy thoughts suggest, for Christ Himself is the glory of that eternal city, and He is present with His people even now.
The better side you long for is not merely a place of safety, but a Person. The chief blessing of heaven, the cream of heaven, the heaven of heaven, is that the saints shall there see Jesus. Christ is all in all to us here, and therefore we long for a heaven in which He shall be all in all to us forever. Apart from Him there is no safety, for the mere existence of the soul will be never ending, but it will be no gift to the ungodly that it will be so. What would be heaven to those who love Him would be terror to those who have not trusted Him.
How then may you be kept safe always, in life and in death, and be sure of that better side? The Scripture says, Whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed. The way of salvation is to believe on Christ, whom God has laid in Zion for a foundation. What is believing on Him? It is trusting in Him, leaving the whole matter of your present and eternal salvation with Him in unquestioning confidence. For Jesus says, I give unto them eternal life, and eternal means without end. If Christ puts the life of God into a man, that life cannot be taken away, it cannot die. And again it is written, This is life eternal, that they might know You the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. To know Him and to accept Him as your God is eternal life.
Therefore take your simple prayer and turn it into faith. Tell the Lord that you have no hope but in His Son who died and rose again, and ask Him to be your light and your salvation, for if your salvation comes from the God of salvation, if it is worked out by the Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ, you need not be afraid that you will ever be robbed of it. Then you may confidently sing with the Psalmist, The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear.
We pray for you now that the eternal God may be your refuge, and underneath you the everlasting arms, that you may drink from eternal springs and know that your life is even now as the days of heaven upon the earth, and that when you pass through the river, you shall find Heaven has come to you because Christ Himself shall welcome you there, and you shall hunger no more and dwell within the circle of His unclouded presence forever. Look to Jesus, trust Him wholly, and you shall be kept safe always.
