It is a good thing to cry unto the Lord in the day of trouble, for He is a very present help. Yet I would have you consider what is the deepest need of your soul. You ask for healing of your body and protection of your eyesight; these are mercies I would not despise, but remember that the Sun of Righteousness has risen with healing in His wings for the sickness of your sin. The leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is full of healing virtue. Before you plead for the safety of your flesh and the coin of this realm, make certain that you have looked to Jesus upon the Cross, and found life in that look at the Crucified One. There is deliverance from a worse captivity than any earthly ill, the power of darkness, and He alone can bring you forth.
You pray for the removal of evil from being on you permanently. This is a right desire, but know that deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from its guilt. If you are truly His, He will not only forgive, but sanctify. He will purge you of every evil thing. But this deliverance comes only when the Lamb is slain for you, when you rest in that Ransom which God himself has found. Then you may sing with Deborah, not of temporal spoils, but of a greater salvation.
As for money and safe travel, our heavenly Father knows your needs. He brought forth Israel with silver and gold, and He can supply your wants in His own time and way. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Do not let the care of these earthly things choke the Word. The clock of mercy strikes in Heaven at the appointed time, and no evil shall ultimately harm those who are hidden in Christ. Yet I would have you examine yourself: if you can sometimes go into sin by way of pleasure, you are a stranger to that deliverance which Jesus gives to His really called and regenerated people. True healing changes the lifeblood and makes the nature other than it was before.
Therefore, let your prayer be not alone for the removal of outward troubles, but for the inward cleansing of your heart. Then, when you have obtained mercy, you shall not die but live, and declare the works of the Lord. There is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety and nine just persons who need no repentance. You cry out to God for healing, for your eyesight, for safety, for money, and for removal of evil. These requests are not wrong in themselves, for our Lord knows we have need of such things. But hear what the Apostle says: “Having food and raiment, let us be therewith content.” And remember, this present life is but a dream; the things we see and clutch at vanish like smoke. Do you ask for health? Ask rather that your soul be healed of the love of the world. Do you seek protection for your eyes? Beg God to open the eyes of your heart to see His truth. You pray for money: but the love of money is the root of all evil. Pray instead for your daily bread, and seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
You ask to be kept safe in travel: yes, God is your refuge, but know that the greatest safety is to walk in His commandments. The evil you wish removed, true deliverance comes from Christ, who gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from this present evil world. If you cling to Him, no permanent evil can touch your soul. Therefore, amend your prayer: cry out for forgiveness, for a clean heart, for strength to resist sin. For the one who is conscious of no evil suffers nothing dreadful; and he who is with Christ, even if he walk through the valley of the shadow of death, need fear no evil. Do not make provision for the flesh to fulfil its lusts, but care for the body only for health, and spend your zeal on eternal things. God will care for you; but let your first desire be to please Him, and then all else will be ordered aright.
