Yet one of the best tests of a man's character will be found in his deepest and heartiest longings, and Scripture asks us to consider what it is we most earnestly desire. The Psalmist cried, My soul breaks with longing for Your Judgments at all times, and Job cried, Oh that I knew where I might find Him. That is the longing which proves spiritual life, a heart breaking to find God Himself, to be near to Christ and to be made holy.
A multitude of hearts upon a profile cannot give the soul what it seeks. There is enough in the world for those who seek the world, but there is not that which is suitable for the children of God. If we do not find joy in God, we are of all men most miserable, for God has spoiled His people for the world, and no number of notices from others can quiet a heart that was made to be satisfied in Christ alone. To open the mouth and pant after the approval of many is to pant after that which cannot fill you, but to long for His commandments is to pant after holiness, and that longing the Lord loves to satisfy.
We will not ask God to bless a pursuit of vanity or to grant many fleeting attentions, for that would not be for your good. Instead we will pray with you for what is better. We pray that you may personally find Christ and feed upon Him, for faith is your own act and deed and no one can believe for you.
