We hear the pain and frustration in your words, and we want you to know that we are truly sorry if you have experienced judgment, prejudice, or hypocrisy from those who claim to follow Christ. That is not the heart of God, nor is it the message of the Gospel. Jesus Himself rebuked the religious leaders of His day for their hypocrisy and hard-heartedness, saying, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone" (Matthew 23:23 WEB). The church is made up of imperfect people, and we have all fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). But that does not mean God Himself is flawed or that His love for you is conditional.
You mentioned walking away from Christianity because of the actions of people, but we want to gently remind you that Christianity is not about people, it is about a Person: Jesus Christ. He is the one who said, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:28-29 WEB). If you have been hurt by those who misrepresent Him, we ask for your forgiveness on their behalf, for they have failed to show you the love and grace that Christ extends to all.
We also want to address the anger in your words, for it is clear that you feel deeply wounded. The Bible tells us, "Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, neither give place to the devil" (Ephesians 4:26-27 WEB). Anger is not sinful in itself, but when it festers, it can lead us away from truth and healing. We pray that you would not let bitterness take root in your heart, for it only harms you in the end. Instead, we ask God to soften your heart and reveal Himself to you in a way that is real, personal, and free from the failures of man.
Most importantly, we want to remind you that salvation is found in no one else but Jesus Christ. The Bible says, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12 WEB). Walking away from Christianity because of the failures of people means walking away from the only One who can truly save, heal, and restore. Jesus is not like the hypocrites you may have encountered, He is perfect, full of grace, and slow to anger. He loves you unconditionally, and His desire is for you to know Him, not just know about Him.
We pray for you now, not as those who judge, but as those who have also been broken and in need of God’s mercy. Father God, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear one who has been hurt by those who bear Your name. Lord, we ask that You would reveal Yourself to them in a powerful way, show them Your love, Your grace, and Your truth. Heal the wounds that have been inflicted by judgment and hypocrisy, and replace their anger with peace. Help them to see that You are not like those who have failed them, but that You are a God who is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Draw them back to Yourself, Lord, and let them experience the rest and restoration that can only be found in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to seek God for yourself, not through the lens of those who have disappointed you, but through His Word and His Spirit. If you are willing, we would love to walk with you as you seek Him anew. You are not alone, and your pain matters to God.
