The Blessings of Following On
Following on to know the Lord brings growing understanding and fresh joy as He reveals Himself to those who seek Him.
We hear your request for a brother who prays in tongues and we want to lift this desire before the Lord with you in Jesus' name, seeking His will and His truth from Scripture.

We understand the longing for fellowship with someone who is Spirit-filled and prayerful, and we share that desire for deep, biblical community. At the same time we want to gently bring what Scripture teaches about tongues so that we are not led astray by seeking a gift above seeking the Giver.

The Bible shows that tongues is one of many gifts given by the Holy Spirit as He wills, not as we demand. Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all. 1 Corinthians 12:4, 1 Corinthians 12:7. And Scripture asks, Do all speak with tongues 1 Corinthians 12:30, with the clear answer being no. Not every believer will have this gift, and having it or not having it is not the measure of spirituality or salvation. What matters is the fruit of the Spirit and love, for though we speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, we have become sounding brass 1 Corinthians 13:1.

When tongues is spoken of in Acts, they were speaking with other languages, as the Spirit gave them to speak Acts 2:4, known languages for the hearing of others. In the church, Paul gives order for its use. For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God 1 Corinthians 14:2, but he also says that in the assembly it should be with interpretation so all are edified, and that we should desire prophecy more because it builds up the church. He concludes, Do not forbid speaking with other languages. But let all things be done decently and in order 1 Corinthians 14:39-40. We must also test all things, as we are told, Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God 1 John 4:1, because there are counterfeits and emotional imitations that are not from the Holy Spirit.

So we would encourage you not to make tongues the primary qualification for a brother in Christ, but rather to look for a brother who loves the Lord Jesus, believes His Word, walks in obedience, bears the fruit of the Spirit, and is faithful in prayer, whether that prayer is in his known language or in a tongue as the Spirit may give. The power of prayer is not in the form but in our access through Christ. The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings which cannot be uttered Romans 8:26 even when we do not have words.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to God and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If we have not yet trusted in Jesus as Lord, believing that God raised Him from the dead and confessing Him as Lord Romans 10:9, then no gift, including tongues, can save us or bring us near to God. We encourage you to be sure your faith is firmly in Christ alone.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You only in the name of Jesus Your Son, and we thank You for this one who desires godly fellowship and a deeper prayer life. We ask that You fill them with Your Holy Spirit and lead them into all truth. Give them discernment to understand Your gifts rightly and to not be deceived, but to seek love and to pursue what builds up the Body of Christ. Provide for them a brother in Christ who is faithful to Your Word, who walks in holiness, who will pray with them and for them with sincerity and truth. If it is Your will for tongues to be part of that fellowship, let it be done according to Scripture in order and for edification, but above all let Christ be exalted and Your will be done. Draw them closer to Jesus, assure them of salvation through His blood, and help them to be rooted in the Scriptures and in a local, Bible-believing church where they can grow and serve. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We encourage you to stay grounded in the Word daily, to pray earnestly in the understanding as well as in the Spirit, and to seek fellowship in a church where the Bible is taught fully and where brothers can bear one another's burdens in truth. The Lord will provide the fellowship you need as you seek first His Kingdom.

Thank you for letting us know what is on your heart. Wanting a brother to pray with you, especially in the way you described, makes sense when you are looking for deeper prayer support and fellowship.

We understand that desire for someone to stand with you in prayer. In our own walk we have found that prayer takes many forms and grows over time with steady practice, like training rather than a single moment. The Spirit works in each of us differently, giving different gifts and forming character, especially love, patience and faithfulness, which show maturity more than any single gift alone.

A good next step could be to share this desire with a trusted pastor or small group leader in your local church. They know the believers around you and can help you connect with mature brothers who can pray with you regularly and walk with you, whether or not they pray in a particular way. Meeting together for prayer and Scripture and fellowship often helps that connection grow naturally.

We are praying for you and would like to continue to stand with you.

Father, we bring our brother before You and ask for Your guidance and presence as he seeks prayer fellowship. Lead him to encouraging community and to brothers who will walk faithfully with him. Grow him in Your love and peace as he seeks You. In Jesus' name, amen.

When I am not sure what to pray for someone, I pray for Him in Tongues, Brother.

Your request for a brother who truly prays has been heard, and it stirs a needful consideration of what it is to pray indeed.

There is a great difference between praying in tongues as men now speak of it, and that praying in the Holy Spirit of which the Scripture speaks, when it says, praying in the Holy Spirit, Jude 1:20. That prayer which is not in the Holy Spirit is in the flesh, and I am sure that the only prayer which is acceptable with God is that which really is a heart prayer, a soul prayer, in fact, a prayer which the Holy Spirit moves us to pray. All else is beating the air and occupying time in vain.

You ask for one who prays in tongues, but I would point you to that which is far more excellent and needful. The work of the Holy Spirit, when He quickens men from their death in sin and when He comforts men and makes them glad in Christ, is not inferior to the power which made men speak with tongues. The Holy Spirit is given in the covenant to all the children of God, and He is the Author of all spiritual life. Until the Holy Spirit visits a man he is dead in trespasses and sins, and prayer without the Spirit is as a bird without wings, or an arrow without a bow.

What then does praying in the Holy Spirit mean. It means praying in the Holy Spirit's power, through the Holy Spirit and by the Holy Spirit. It is faith praying, for that man has no faith who has no prayer, and love praying, for true prayer must be loving prayer if it is praying in the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who first regenerated us, who instructs us, who helps our infirmities, and who glorifies Christ, for it is written of Him, He shall glorify Me, John 16:14. The Holy Spirit does not lead us to seek after signs or sounds, but to receive of the things of Christ and show them to us.

Therefore seek not so much a brother distinguished by a gift, but a brother who is taught entirely by the Holy Spirit, who walks in holiness and not after the flesh, who does not grieve the Holy Spirit by bitterness or love of the world, but who abounds in faith and therefore abounds in supplication. Such a man will pray with you out of the depths, and you shall yet sing Gloria in Excelsis because you have first cried De Profundis.

Let your own prayer be that most needful prayer, Cast me not away from Your Presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me, Psalm 51:11. Withdraw His power in prayer and His faith in the promise and the believer is ruined indeed. But cry mightily in the name and merit of Christ Jesus the Savior, and He will not cast you away. Be much in prayer to God, frequent an earnest ministry, and get much with earnest saints, and let your daily cry be, Return, return, O Holy Spirit, return and dwell in my soul.

We will pray for you that you may receive the Holy Spirit since you believed, not for a display, but for life and power and much assurance, that your prayers may be in the Spirit and therefore prevail with God through Jesus Christ our only hope.
