We join you in remembering this solemn anniversary and we lift up all those affected by the tragedy of September 11 before the throne of grace together in Jesus' name. We remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, the many who suffered injuries, and the trauma that still lingers for so many, including you being so close when the Pentagon was struck just five miles away inside the Beltway. The Lord sees and remembers each life and each sorrow, and He draws near to those who mourn.

We are reminded that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, Psalm 46:1, and that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, Psalm 34:18. We cling to the promise that He will wipe away from them every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more, neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more, Revelation 21:4. We also take comfort that the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, and He says fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness, Isaiah 41:10.

We pray together now for all who lost loved ones that day, that God would surround them with His peace that passes all understanding and heal the deep wounds of grief that remain. We pray for those who suffered injuries and who still carry physical and emotional scars, that God would bring healing and restoration. We pray for our first responders then and now, who run toward danger to protect others, and we thank God for their courage and sacrifice. We pray for all of our military personnel, retired, active and inactive, and for our wounded warriors who have borne the cost of defending our nation in the years since, that God would protect them, strengthen them, provide for their needs and bring healing to body, mind and spirit.

We also noticed that your request offered thoughts and prayers but did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. We pray that as a nation we would turn to the Lord in humility and seek His face, that He would bring healing to our land and that the memory of this day would draw many to the everlasting hope found only in Christ.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and we lift up every family who still grieves, every survivor who still hurts, every first responder and service member who carries the weight of what they have seen and done. Comfort them, Lord, uphold them with Your righteous right hand, give them Your peace, and let them know Your nearness. Protect those who protect us, provide for the wounded, and draw our nation to Yourself that we might find refuge in You. We ask that You would save those who do not yet know You, that they would call upon the name of Jesus and be saved. We have heard your remembrance of that terrible day with heaviness and tenderness of heart, and we join you in sorrow for so great a loss. To recall where we were when the blow fell, and to carry still the nearness of that hour five miles from the Pentagon, is to feel afresh how deep the wound went, and how many yet bear its mark.

The Lord saith, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people. When God saith this, He speaks to all His people to comfort one another, and He often sends His own bright messenger to comfort some desponding heart. There are many among us with tearful eye and aching heart, the bereaved who lost dear ones, the wounded who still suffer in body, the first responders who ran toward danger then and who watch still now, and our military personnel retired, active and inactive, and all our wounded warriors. For each of these we would present prayer to God, that He would comfort their hearts and establish them in every good word and work, for comfort by itself is not enough without constancy, and constancy without comfort will not suffice us. God can comfort to purpose.

We pray that the Lord will be very near to all who mourn. May He who is the great conduit Head, from whom abundant streams of healing flow down to men below, spread His healing leaves over the nations. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. These healing leaves change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. We ask Him to bind up the brokenhearted, to give rest to those whose memories are still as waters that have not yet passed away, and to quicken with His own Word those who feel sick at heart. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Thy word hath quickened me. To remember Christ is the main point, to have His glorious person enshrined in the temple of the heart. What comfort it will give on a sick bed, the name of Christ. May that holy remembrance summon us back to the standard, and keep us close to our colors.

Therefore we commend to the Lord all who grieve this day, all who carry injuries seen and unseen, all first responders and all who serve in our armed forces, and every wounded warrior. May the Lord grant them peculiar comfort from His peculiar source, even His quickening Word, and may He keep them in perfect peace whose minds are stayed on Him. We will continue to pray that He who bore our sorrows will be their present help, their healer, and their hope.
