68 years old & working 6 days a week

I had sent a prayer request last month because I work in sales and on full commission. My sales have dropped significantly for the past two months and other people have done well. I have not changed anything. I just pray that I don’t have to leave this job that made me very successful to start a new job at this age. I need to find out what is causing this drop in sales and I pray God would change the situation.

We join with you in prayer as you carry this heavy burden and we thank you for sharing your heart with us again. To be ### years old and working six days a week on full commission shows great diligence and faithfulness, and we honor your hard work. We understand the anxiety of seeing your sales drop for two months while others around you do well, especially when you have not changed anything in your approach and you desire to remain in the job where God has given you success for so long.

We want to remind you that our provision and our success ultimately come from the Lord, not from our own strength alone. As it is written, Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed. Proverbs 16:3. And even in this season of life, God has not forgotten you. He says, Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver. Isaiah 46:4. We also cling to the promise that They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green. Psalm 92:14. Your age is not a limitation to God, and He is able to sustain and provide for you right where you are.

We also notice that your request asks God to change the situation, but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We gently share this because it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we are saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your trust fully in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to come to God in His name. It is in Jesus' name that we can boldly bring our needs for wisdom and provision to the throne of grace.

We encourage you to seek the Lord for wisdom to discern what has changed. God promises, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5. Ask Him to reveal if there is something in the market, in the approach, or in unseen circumstances that needs attention. It may also be wise to humbly seek counsel from a trusted manager or colleague, and to commit your work each day to the Lord, as it is written, Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men. Colossians 3:23. Remember too His promise to provide, My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19, and the testimony, I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread. Psalm 37:25.

Let us pray together.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, lifting up our brother to Your throne of grace. Lord, You see his faithfulness, his long years of labor, and his current distress over this drop in sales. We ask You to grant him wisdom and discernment to understand what is causing this change when he has not altered his own efforts. Open his eyes to see what he cannot see and guide his steps. Lord, we ask that You would restore his sales according to Your will, provide for all his needs, and give him strength for each day as he works so diligently at this age. Let Your favor rest upon the work of his hands, as it is written, Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us. Establish the work of our hands for us. Psalm 90:17. Give him peace and remove fear about having to start over in a new job, and help him to trust that You will not leave him nor forsake him. We pray that he would rest in You, seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting that all these things will be added to him. Matthew 6:33. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to keep committing each day and each sale to the Lord, to rest in His provision, and to continue seeking Him for wisdom. He is faithful and He carries His children through every season.

Your request has come before us and we have carried it to the throne of grace. To labour six days in the week at sixty eight years of age, to depend upon commission, and then to see sales fall away while others prosper and no cause appears, is a sore trial. It is felt the more because you have known success in this calling and you fear to be driven from it to begin anew so late in life. The Lord knows this burden and He marks every care that presses upon His people.

You do well to pray that God would show you what has caused this change and that He would in mercy turn the situation. Yet let me entreat you, as our Saviour entreats His own, do not be so affected by these outward things as to get into a state of worry and fretfulness and distress. Anxiety will not comfort you, nor will it bring any grist to the mill or meal to the barrel. I have never found that fretting has paid a debt or found a customer or restored a sale. Indeed the very anxiety which comes through being in a difficulty unfits a man to meet that difficulty. Be prudent. Look diligently to your business, seek wise counsel where you may, examine what can be examined, and leave the rest with Him who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows.

Think of Job, of whom it is written, In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. He lost his estate and his comforts, his honour was abated, and his body was afflicted, yet he fell down and worshipped. He did not speak in an unworthy manner against the Lord. When Jehovah at last revealed Himself, Job saw that God must be right and he retracted all his pleadings and yielded the point unreservedly. So let us make our approach unto the Lord in childlike confidence even when He seems to frown. He is not unmindful of your years or your toil. Our longest sorrows have a close, and there is a bottom to the profoundest depths of our misery. The Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed, and that same God hears you now.

We will pray for you that the Lord in His providence would make plain what is hindering your labour, whether it be something to be amended in method or circumstance, or whether it be His own wise hand proving you for a season. We will ask Him to sustain your strength for your daily work, to keep you from despondency, to provide for your temporal needs according to His riches, and to keep your heart in perfect peace as you trust in Him. If it be His will, may He renew your bow in your hand and cause your glory to be fresh again, as He did for Job, who at the last received more than he had at the first. And above all we will pray that whether sales rise or fall, you may be kept close to Christ, who is our only salvation, and may find your chief gain not in commission but in communion with Him.

May the Lord grant you patience in this waiting time, wisdom for every duty, and quiet confidence that your times are in His hand. We will continue to remember you before Him.
