Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You ask prayers for a safe return, and rightly so, for the path of this world is set with snares. Yet consider what safety truly is. We often think only of the body, but the soul’s peril is far greater. When we hand over our loved ones to the world, it is like placing them with corrupt servants. If even a child guarded by a father’s constant wisdom is preserved with difficulty, how much more must we fear when they walk among influences that treat them as enemies, striving to weaken their resolve and make them lovers of comfort rather than truth? Pray first that the one you love is guarded from such intermixing, that he may return not only in body but uncorrupted in faith.
Let us be sober, understanding the devil’s craft. All around us, on every side, are precipices. A moment of slumber, a single misstep into the errors and ungodliness of the age, and one is swept away. Urge him to travel the narrow way, in fear because of those precipices, yet confident because Jesus is our guide. True safe homecoming is to be found walking in that light, not sitting in the shadow of death where the world’s entertainments and false doctrines hold sway. Plead with God to illuminate his path with that great and true light, which is Christ Himself, and to grant him a wakeful spirit.
Pray therefore with this mingled confidence and holy fear. Ask not merely that he come to the door of his earthly house, but that he be kept ready for that Day when all accounts are settled. For what benefit is a safe return now, if the soul is compromised? Let your prayer be that he, becoming better through any trial, may draw down God’s grace and be found having it safe, purged of the old leaven of malice and wickedness. Commend him not to unpromised second chances through careless living, but to the mercy of God who does not desire him to meet temptations presumptuously, but to stand manfully when they come. This is to ask for his true and lasting safety. Let us join in this prayer, beseeching the Lord who commanded us to be sober and watchful, that your loved one may be returned to you both in body and in the wholeness of a soul anchored in Christ.
