We hear your heart’s cry as you seek to examine your life before the Lord. This is a holy and necessary work, one that Scripture itself calls us to: "Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or don’t you know as to yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?, unless indeed you are disqualified" (2 Corinthians 13:5 WEB). The Lord does not desire perfection from you, but a heart that is willing to be searched, refined, and surrendered to Him.
First, we must address a foundational truth: salvation and access to God come only through Jesus Christ. There is no other name by which we may be saved (Acts 4:12). If you have not placed your faith in Him, acknowledging your sin, repenting, and trusting in His death and resurrection for your forgiveness, then this is the first and most critical matter of your heart. Without Christ, our deeds, no matter how good they may seem, cannot justify us before a holy God. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9 WEB). If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus, we urge you to do so now. Confess your sins, believe in Him, and receive the gift of eternal life.
If you are already in Christ, then your question reflects a godly desire for holiness and self-examination. The Lord delights in this! However, we must be cautious not to fall into the trap of self-condemnation or legalism. The enemy often twists our introspection into shame, making us focus on our failures rather than Christ’s finished work. Remember: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1 WEB). The Lord’s discipline is not meant to crush you but to lead you to repentance and deeper dependence on Him.
Let us prayerfully examine your heart together, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal anything that does not align with God’s Word. Have you spoken words that were unkind, dishonest, or careless? "Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear" (Ephesians 4:29 WEB). Have your deeds reflected love for God and neighbor, or have they been self-serving? "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men" (Colossians 3:23 WEB). Have you harbored bitterness, unforgiveness, or pride in your heart? "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:31-32 WEB).
If the Holy Spirit convicts you of specific sins, do not despair. Confess them to the Lord, and He is faithful and just to forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Repentance is not a one-time event but a lifestyle for the believer. It is the pathway to freedom and restoration.
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble and contrite hearts, grateful for the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all sin. Lord, we ask You to search our hearts, as the psalmist prayed: "Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way" (Psalm 139:23-24 WEB). Reveal to us any area of our lives that does not align with Your will, whether in our words, deeds, or the hidden motives of our hearts.
Father, if there is unconfessed sin in our lives, we ask for Your forgiveness. We renounce any pride, selfishness, or rebellion that has taken root. Cleanse us, Lord, and restore to us the joy of Your salvation. Help us to walk in the light as You are in the light, so that we may have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus, Your Son, cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7).
Lord, we also ask for the strength to change. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, that we may bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Teach us to speak words that build up and encourage, to act with integrity and love, and to live in a manner worthy of the calling we have received in Christ.
If we have hurt others with our words or deeds, give us the courage to seek their forgiveness and to make amends where possible. Help us to forgive those who have wronged us, just as You have forgiven us. Guard our hearts from bitterness and resentment, and fill us with Your peace.
Above all, Lord, we desire to live for Your glory. May our lives reflect Your love and truth to a world in need of You. We surrender every area of our lives to You, our thoughts, our words, our actions, and our future. May we decrease so that You may increase in us (John 3:30).
We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who alone makes us righteous before You. Amen.
Beloved, the Lord is not looking for perfection, but for a heart that is fully His. If you have stumbled, do not stay in the place of shame. Rise up, receive His forgiveness, and walk in the newness of life that Christ has purchased for you. "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23 WEB). Keep pressing into Him, and He will complete the good work He has begun in you (Philippians 1:6).
