The desperate cry of your heart echoes the plight of one who has no money, and I bid you hear the word of the Lord: “He that has no money; come, buy, and eat.” You are brought to an extremity of need, and that is no strange place for a miracle. Christ delights to work when the creature’s strength is utterly gone. The power of Christ to save from sin does not lie in the person saved, it lies wholly in Jesus Himself. So, too, with every temporal trial: your deliverance hangs not on your ability to persuade ### or to rush the tax funds, but on the boundless compassion of the Saviour. Consider the miracle of the loaves: need of merit did not exclude one person from that feast, and it need not exclude you. If you can bring nothing whatever, you need His miraculous power all the more. Draw near to Him without a penny of your own, and cry for the mercy that asks no price.

You are troubled over a hard heart, ###’s, you say. But the heart of every man is stone until the Spirit melts it. Do not fix your hope upon her Zelle, but upon Him who can turn the king’s heart as rivers of water. The miracle of grace makes even a loathsome monster of guilt into a child of God; how much more can He soften a hotel manager for the space of an afternoon? While you pray for the miracle of a few dollars and a reprieve from the street, God holds out to you a far greater miracle: the forgiveness of your sins, freely given without money and without price. A true sense of your need is already His work in you, else you would not cry so earnestly. Yet your greatest need is not a settled bill, but a healed soul. Christ’s compassion was excited for a woman bent double with infirmity, and He loosed her in a moment; so He can straighten all that the Evil One has twisted in your life. If He has done for you all that you need for eternity, then bring this hard case before Him now. The One who multiplied the loaves can stretch a few dollars into a week of shelter. Only trust in His eternal power, and there is nothing between this hotel lobby and Heaven that need give you fear.
