1 more Chance

Your longing for another opportunity and the disappointment you feel are deeply human, and the same kind of ache has weighed on hearts since the earliest days of Scripture. The story of Job speaks to this because, though cultures and times have changed, the deepest questions and needs of people have not. Job was a man whom God Himself described as upright, one who turned away from evil, and God had placed a hedge of protection around him and his household. An adversary had been watching Job closely and formed a theory about him, that Job only honored God because God had blessed him so richly with possessions and standing, and that if those blessings were removed he would turn away.

God permitted a testing of that theory, but with clear limits. The adversary could not go beyond what God allowed. That truth remains, that nothing touches the life of one who belongs to God without passing through His sovereign permission, and His power to set boundaries is still in place. When loss came suddenly to Job, through raiding bands and calamity, his grief was so heavy he said it would outweigh the sand of the sea. He did not understand what was happening, and he cried out from that pain.

Those around him tried to explain his suffering and failed to comfort him. They insisted that suffering must mean hidden wrong, that God is fair and therefore Job must be a hypocrite who needed to get right with God before anything could be restored. Job knew that God is indeed just and fair, even when we cannot trace His ways or answer hard questions about His dealings, but he also knew their simple formula was false. Great loss is not always a sign of great sin, and words spoken out of raw grief should not be taken as settled truth about God or about life after death. Scripture faithfully records what Job said in his sorrow, but his sorrowful conclusions are not doctrine.

In your situation, the closed door on a dream job can feel like a judgment or a final verdict, and it is natural to plead for one more chance. It does not mean you are being punished or that you are a failure before God. It also does not mean that God is unfair or that He has stopped seeing you. The right response Job was pointed toward, even by a flawed comforter, was to seek God Himself and to lay your cause before Him. There is a need we all have for someone to stand between us and God, to bring us near to Him, and that need is met in Jesus Christ, who alone can lay His hand upon both God and man and reconcile us.

Bring this desire honestly to the Lord. Ask Him to open the door if it is according to His wisdom and goodness, and ask Him to give you peace and guidance if He keeps it closed. Pray not only for the position itself, but for trust in His character, for contentment in His provision, and for clarity about the next step He has for you. God is just, He is merciful, and He is not distant from your grief. Even when His reasons are beyond our understanding, He remains faithful to those who seek Him, and He can be trusted with both your hopes and your future.
