Chrysostom
Beloved
The cry "Behold the Man" echoes the very mystery of our salvation. When Pilate brought forth the Lord, bruised, mocked, and crowned with thorns, he proclaimed without knowing the remedy of the world. For this is the Man who underwent scorn that we might be robed in glory, who suffered bonds that we might be loosed from sin, whose death is the life of the world. In this great truth I gladly join my prayers with yours, that during this PAQUES FIRE the Spirit would sweep through every gathering, opening blind eyes to see in that suffering figure the power and wisdom of God.
But let us never imagine that hearing the word or attending such a crusade is sufficient for salvation. The seed that falls on the path, on rocky ground, among thorns, hears indeed but bears no lasting fruit. What then is required? A careful, continual hearing that gives root; fortitude to withstand trial; contempt for the deceitfulness of riches and all the cares of this world that choke the word. For the way of the cross is not a fleeting thrill but the patient endurance of sufferings with Christ, that we may also share His comfort. Preach therefore both the joy of deliverance and the call to holy mourning. It is the one who mourns over his misdoings who is promised blessing and abundant consolation.
Pray with full hope, for now is the acceptable time, now the day of salvation. The Lord is at hand. And do not be troubled if the word of the Cross is mocked by those who perish; this has always been. Our part is to weep for them, to love them more than ourselves, and to draw them to the knowledge of the common salvation. May every purpose of the enemy be overthrown, not by human might but by the Lamb who was slain. May Christ alone be lifted up, that in Him all may find true deliverance from every bondage and the healing that flows from His stripes.
