When you say, “Humanly this is impossible,” you speak rightly, for the hope set before us is not according to human reason but according to the power of God, who calls those things which are not as though they were. Abraham believed in hope against hope, and against nature itself he staggered not at the promise. The barren womb, the deadness of the body, these were to him not contradictions but occasions for faith to shine brighter. So now for you, what seems a dead heart, a withered soul, a faded joy, these are not obstacles to God but the very material upon which His resurrection power works. Only believe, and you shall see the glory of God.
Do not say in your heart, “Who shall ascend into heaven to bring Christ down?” or “Who shall descend into the deep to bring Him up again?” The word is nigh you, in your mouth and in your heart. Confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, and you shall be saved, not only saved in the world to come, but restored here and now to the joy of His salvation. The Bridegroom’s voice is not silent; He still stands at the door of your heart and speaks. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. When you hear that voice, the voice that called Lazarus from the tomb, the voice that said to the dead maid, “Arise,” do you not perceive that He who stands and hears rejoices greatly? The friend of the Bridegroom waits for that voice, and when he hears it, his joy is fulfilled. So too, your joy will be restored, not as a fleeting emotion, but as the deep laughter of Sarah beholding the impossible made true.
Yet if you would have this joy, you must stand firm. The apostle exhorts us to hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Not only to begin, but to finish. Do not be like the Israelites whose carcasses fell in the wilderness because of an evil heart of unbelief. The promise remains; Today is ever while the world lasts. If today you hear His voice, harden not your heart. Joseph, when told to flee into Egypt, asked no questions, sought no signs, but rose in the night and obeyed with joy. He held the promise against all seeming contradictions: the Savior fleeing, the King in exile. So now, though your heart feels barren and your spirit is pressed down, cling to the word. Say with Job, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.” This is the obedience of faith.
And do not think you sigh alone. The body of Christ is knit together in love; if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. When you weep, the whole Church weeps with you, and I myself burn with your pain. But we do not sorrow as those who have no hope, for if one member is honored, all rejoice. Your restoration will be our joy, a festival of the Bridegroom’s glory. Already I see it: you laughing, rejoicing, hoping again. That day is not far off, for the Lord is rich in mercy and His compassions fail not. He who quickened the dead womb of Sarah and raised Lazarus from corruption will breathe upon your dry bones and they shall live. The evening of weeping will give way to the morning of gladness.
Therefore, cast away carnal reasonings that lean upon your own strength or upon any human help. The fathers ate manna in the wilderness and are dead; the refuge of earthly consolations will not sustain. Let your hope rest wholly upon the living God and upon His faithful word. Repentance and faith, these are the means. Return to the Lord with weeping and supplication, and He will revive your spirit. The righteousness which is of faith does not command impossible tasks; it bids you confess and believe. With the heart man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Do this, and you shall taste again the joy of His presence.
Rise then, my child, from the dust of despondency. Shake off the grave-clothes of despair. He who calls you is faithful, and He will do it. Even now the dawn is breaking; the voice of the turtle is heard in our land. Hope in God, for you shall yet praise Him who is the health of your countenance and your God.
