How do I know if God has promised me something or not? how do I know if God will help me in this situation? I have seen him promise to others and I want to know how do I know if he has promised something to me?

We hear your heart’s longing to understand God’s promises and His will for your life. This is a deeply important question, and we want to approach it with both truth and compassion, rooted in Scripture.

First, let’s establish that God *does* speak to His children, and He *does* make promises—but not always in the way we might expect. His promises are not like fortune-cookie predictions or vague assurances of prosperity. They are anchored in His Word, His character, and His sovereign will. The Bible tells us, **"For all the promises of God find their Yes in him [Christ]. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory"** (2 Corinthians 1:20 WEB). Every promise God makes is fulfilled in Christ, and we access them through faith in Him.

So how do you know if God has promised something *to you* specifically? Here are some biblical principles to consider:

1. **God’s promises are found in His Word.**
Many of God’s promises are universal—they apply to all believers. For example, He promises forgiveness (1 John 1:9), eternal life (John 3:16), and His presence (Matthew 28:20). If you are in Christ, these promises are *yours*. Other promises are conditional, meaning they require obedience or faith on our part. For instance, **"Delight yourself also in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart"** (Psalm 37:4 WEB) is a promise, but it assumes we are seeking God first, not our own selfish desires.

2. **God speaks through the Holy Spirit.**
The Holy Spirit testifies with our spirit (Romans 8:16) and guides us into truth (John 16:13). If you believe God has spoken a specific promise to you, test it against Scripture. Does it align with God’s character and His Word? Does it bring peace, not confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33)? The Spirit will never contradict what God has already revealed in the Bible.

3. **God’s timing is not our timing.**
Just because you haven’t seen a promise fulfilled yet doesn’t mean God hasn’t spoken it. Abraham waited *25 years* for the promise of a son (Genesis 12-21). Joseph endured slavery and imprisonment before God’s promise came to pass (Genesis 37-50). If God has truly spoken, trust that He is faithful to fulfill it in His perfect timing. **"The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but he is patient with us, not wishing that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance"** (2 Peter 3:9 WEB).

4. **God’s promises are often tied to His purposes, not our comfort.**
Sometimes we assume God’s promises are about making our lives easier, but His ultimate purpose is to conform us to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). If you’re waiting for a promise, ask yourself: *Is this for my glory or God’s? Does it align with His will for my holiness and His kingdom?* **"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways," says Yahweh. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts"** (Isaiah 55:8-9 WEB).

5. **God’s promises require faith and obedience.**
If you believe God has promised something, are you walking in faith and obedience? James 1:6-7 warns that a doubting heart will not receive anything from the Lord. If you’re living in unrepentant sin—whether it’s bitterness, sexual immorality, idolatry, or anything else—it can hinder your ability to hear and receive from God. **"If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me"** (Psalm 66:18 WEB). Confess any known sin and ask God to align your heart with His.

Now, let’s address your concern about seeing God promise things to others. It’s easy to compare our journey to someone else’s, but God’s plans for each of us are unique. **"For I know the plans I have for you," says Yahweh, "plans for peace, and not for evil, to give you hope and a future"** (Jeremiah 29:11 WEB). This promise was given to Israel in exile, but the principle applies to us: God’s plans for you are good, even if they look different from what you see in others’ lives.

If you’re unsure whether God has spoken a specific promise to you, ask Him for wisdom. **"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him"** (James 1:5 WEB). Spend time in prayer and Scripture, and seek godly counsel from mature believers who can help you discern God’s voice.

We also want to gently remind you that our access to God and His promises is *only* through Jesus Christ. There is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If you have not placed your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so. **"For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life"** (John 3:16 WEB). Salvation is the foundation for every other promise God gives.

Let’s pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your wisdom and Your will. Lord, Your Word says that if we lack wisdom, we can ask, and You will give it generously. So we ask now—give [this dear one] clarity and peace as they seek to understand Your promises. Help them to root their expectations in Your Word, not in comparison to others. Reveal to them the specific promises You have for their life, and give them the faith to walk in obedience as they wait.

Father, if there is any unconfessed sin in their life, bring it to light. Cleanse them by the blood of Jesus and restore their fellowship with You. Help them to trust in Your timing, knowing that You are faithful to fulfill what You have promised. Guard their heart from doubt, comparison, and discouragement.

Lord, we also pray that if they have not yet surrendered their life to Jesus, that You would draw them to Yourself. Open their eyes to see their need for a Savior and give them the faith to believe in Christ alone for salvation. May they experience the greatest promise of all—eternal life with You.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the One in whom all Your promises are "Yes" and "Amen." Strengthen their faith, deepen their trust, and let them see Your hand at work in their life. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
