You are right to hold fast to the full weight of the Great Commission. Making disciples does not end with baptizing; it continues in teaching obedience to everything Jesus commanded. And that includes the hard, careful work of church discipline laid out in Matthew 18. When you have reached out and received only vague, polite generalities in return, you are not facing a misunderstanding. You are facing a refusal to hear. Politeness can be its own form of resistance, a way of deflecting the sharp edge of truth without ever engaging it.

The Scriptures do not give us the option of silence simply because the listener seems unwilling. Ezekiel was sent to a rebellious house and told to speak whether they listened or not. That pattern runs through the whole story of God's people. Moses was told plainly that Pharaoh would not listen, yet he was commanded to speak again and again. Jeremiah rose early to deliver warnings that most of his generation ignored. Jesus, perfect in love and wisdom, was not received by the world He made. When He sent out the seventy, He prepared them for rejection, not for universal welcome. The goal is not to be well thought of; the goal is to deliver the word faithfully, leaving the outcome with God.

When the leaders you address sidestep the clear command of Matthew 18, they are not merely being cautious. They are neglecting the means Jesus gave to pursue a wandering soul and to maintain the purity of His church. Church discipline, carried out in the spirit of meekness and with the hope of restoration, is not a harsh add-on to the gospel. It is part of how we teach obedience to all Christ commanded. To bypass it is to act as though some commands can be set aside when they become difficult. Love speaks the truth because love desires repentance, not the false peace of an unaddressed sin.

Be careful that your own heart does not grow bitter in the waiting. It is possible to contend for the truth and yet lose the spirit of forgiveness. The command to go to an erring brother is never a license for resentment. You must keep in view the hope that she would be brought to repentance and restored to holiness in the community. The goal is always restoration, not merely the vindication of a process. But restoration cannot happen where sin is left unnamed and unaddressed.

Jesus warned that a house built on mere consent to truth rather than on obedience to truth will fall when the storm comes. You can say "Lord, Lord" and still be fooling yourself if you will not do what He says. So your insistence that the full counsel of Matthew 18 be carried out is not stubbornness. It is a recognition that the Lord's own method for dealing with serious sin is not optional. It is how He preserves His church as salt and light in a dark world. When a church loses its purifying influence, it becomes good for nothing and is eventually trampled underfoot.

Do not be surprised that the response so far is evasion rather than engagement. The Spirit's work is to convict the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. That conviction is often met with deflection before it ever leads to brokenness. Your part is to keep speaking the truth in love, not to manage the reaction. Jesus said that the word itself will judge the one who rejects it on the last day. Your faithfulness is measured not by whether they listen, but by whether you speak what He has given you to say.

May God strengthen your heart to fear Him more than you fear man. May He give you the wisdom to know what to say and the courage to say it clearly, leaving the results entirely in His hands. And may He grant that the heart resistant now will yet be turned, through the faithful witness of His word, to repentance and life.
