We hear your heart in this cry to be led back from being astray and to return to justice and to the cause that God has placed before you, and we stand with you in this desire. The feeling of asking again and again what about me is one that many know when they feel forgotten or overlooked, but our God sees you and has not forgotten you.
The word of God tells us that wandering from His path is common to us all, for all we like sheep have gone astray, everyone has turned to his own way, and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all Isaiah 53:6. Yet there is hope for return, for you were going astray like sheep, but now have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls 1 Peter 2:25. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake Psalm 23:3. When we stray, the call of God is to return, for it is written Return, you backsliding children, I will heal your backsliding Jeremiah 3:22. We gently rebuke the path that led you astray, for it does not lead to life, and we urge you to turn fully away from it and toward the Lord in repentance. My brothers, if any among you wanders from the truth and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins James 5:19-20.
You speak of justice and of your cause, and we want to align that cause with God's justice. He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God Micah 6:8. True justice is not our own idea of what is fair for ourselves, but walking in His righteousness, learning to do well, seeking justice, relieving the oppressed Isaiah 1:17. When we make our cause His cause, we find purpose that does not fade.
That repeated question what about me reveals a weary heart that feels unseen. We encourage you to bring that honest question to the Father, for He cares for you. Yet scripture also calls us to shift our focus from self to Christ, for nothing should be done through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself, each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others Philippians 2:3-4. When we seek first God's Kingdom and his righteousness, all these things will be given to you as well Matthew 6:33. He has not overlooked you, for even the hairs of your head are all numbered Matthew 10:30, and those who delight themselves in Yahweh, He will give them the desires of their heart Psalm 37:4.
We notice that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we must speak to this because it is only through Him that we can return to the Father and find true justice and restoration. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. It is by calling on the name of Jesus that our prayers are heard and our wandering finds an end at the cross.
We pray together for you now. Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this one who feels led astray and longs to return to Your justice and Your purpose. We ask that You forgive every step taken away from Your path and wash this dear one clean by the blood of Jesus. Restore his soul and guide his feet back to paths of righteousness for Your name's sake. Heal the weariness of asking what about me and show him that he is seen, known, and deeply loved by You. Replace self focus with a hunger for Your kingdom and help his cause to become Your cause, that he may act justly and love mercy and walk humbly with You. Your words have been heard, though they come to us broken and burdened, as one who feels led astray and now longs for a right way to return, asking again and again, what shall be done for me.
Do not appeal to justice, for justice will try you and condemn you. God will not deal with you on those terms. As it has been well said, confess that you are guilty and ask Him for His mercy's sake to pass over your guilt. Your hope is not in making out a good case before Him, but in casting yourself upon His mercy in Jesus Christ alone, through whom alone there is salvation.
You ask about wandering and returning. Remember Peter. He had fallen, but he had not fallen away, for only a little after his denial there was Peter at the tomb of his Master, running to meet his Lord. The Lord did not wait until Peter came back, but He came after him, sending word, Go tell my disciples and Peter. When Peter was penitent, the Lord never rebuked him except in such a gentle way that he was rather comforted than rebuked. If almighty love has drawn you back again after sad wanderings, lay yourself out with all your heart to do good and to seek Him again.
You feel as one broken. I have sometimes heard of a bone that has been broken and has become stronger after the fracture than it was before. So the Lord makes perfect restoration. He brought back Israel and Judah after long provocation when they were carried away captive, and He will bring back the contrite soul that turns to Him. That restoration is not a removal of temptation, nor a promise that you will of yourself behave better, but a work of grace that changes the heart radically and lastingly, so that you shall not depart from Him as He will not depart from you.
Therefore do not despair though you have sought Him again and again without yet feeling cheered. Faith alone can keep a soul under discouragement seeking after Christ. Other causes may send you a certain distance, but only faith will bring you to the goal. Cry after Christ Himself, not after men. The woman of Canaan cried after the Master, and at last she heard those heavenly notes, O woman, great is thy faith, be it unto thee even as thou wilt. So keep crying after Him. All your groans will not help you apart from faith, but faith in Him will never be sent away empty.
If the grace of God has truly begun a work in you, that work will be performed until the day of Christ. It is a gift from Christ and He will not withdraw His gift, for it is a life which is in itself immortal and eternal. This perseverance is perseverance in holiness. They shall not depart from me, saith the Lord. Come then with the prayer of David in Psalm 51, with sighs and groans and cries, confessing sin without excuse, and looking only to the atonement which Christ has offered. Who is he that condemneth, when it is Christ that died, yea rather that is risen again.
Turn to Him now. Confess plainly, trust wholly in the Lord Jesus, and ask for the Holy Spirit to keep you. And when you are converted, strengthen your brethren, for there are others who have been staggered and who need one who has been restored to tell them that they also may return.
May the Lord grant you repentance, faith, and perfect restoration, and keep you by His power through faith unto salvation.
