Vision

Beloved of All
Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
In Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

We join with you in this desire to seek God's vision rather than simply pursuing personal goals, and we thank God that you have asked this in the mighty name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father.

We love your heart to not lean on your own understanding but to desire what God desires for you. The verse you quoted is so important, and we want to gently bring its full meaning to light. In the World English Bible Proverbs 29:18 says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint, but one who keeps the law is blessed. The vision spoken of here is not merely a personal plan or ambition, but the revealed Word and will of God. Without His revelation, His law and His prophetic truth, people wander without restraint and perish. With it, we are blessed as we walk in obedience.

Your prayer that you quoted, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17, is a beautiful reminder that God indeed does not change like shifting shadows. He is faithful to fulfill what He reveals, and every true vision from Him is a good and perfect gift.

We encourage you to continue seeking visions from God, but to always test what you receive against Scripture, for His Word is our primary vision and lamp. Psalm 119:105 says Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. And 1 John 4:1 tells us Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God. True visions from God will never contradict His written Word, they will draw you closer to Christ, produce holiness, and align with His character.

God does still speak and give vision. As it is written in Acts 2:17 It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. We should desire these gifts, but we must desire the Giver more than the gift, and seek His will above all.

We also rejoice that you do not want to just follow your own personal goals. Proverbs 3:5-6 says Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And Jeremiah 29:11 says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. His vision for your life is higher and more hopeful than any plan you could make for yourself.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. We thank You for our brother or sister who humbly asks for Your vision and not their own. Lord, pour out Your Spirit upon them. Grant them revelation, wisdom and clarity according to Your will. Open the eyes of their heart to see what You are doing and to hear Your voice through Your Word. Help them to not cast off restraint but to keep Your law and walk in blessing. Lead them away from selfish ambition and into the good, pleasing and perfect will You have for them. Give them discernment to test every vision and to hold fast to what is from You, and give them courage to obey what You show them. Fulfill in them every good purpose You have ordained. We ask all of this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We appreciate you sharing this desire with us. Wanting God's vision instead of just following your own goals is a humble and good place to be, and we are glad you brought it to the Lord so honestly.

We have found that what God gives as vision is often less like a sudden picture and more like a growing clarity about His calling that shapes our daily choices. It gives us a reason to follow Him rather than ourselves, and it forms over time as we walk with Him.

As you keep praying for this, one steady practice that helps many is to bring the same simple prayer before God each day, asking Him to align your heart with what He wants, and then to stay close to Him through His Word and through trusted believers who know you. That regular listening and community often makes His direction clearer than waiting for a single moment.

We are praying for you to have peace as you wait and confidence that God hears you and delights to lead you.

Father, we lift our friend to You and thank You for the desire You have placed in their heart to follow You. Guide their steps, quiet striving for their own plans, and make Your way clear in Your timing. Give them a steady sense of Your calling and joy in walking with You each day. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your desire to be governed not by your own personal goals but by the Lord is itself a good evidence that the Spirit is working in you to will to do of His own good pleasure. For as surely as God's will is the axle of the universe, and as certainly as His will is the great heart of providence sending its pulsings through even the most distant limbs of human act, so in grace we may rest assured that He is King, willing to do as He pleases, having mercy on whom He will have mercy.

You have quoted that weighty word, Where there is no vision, the people perish. That vision is not the fancy of a restless mind, nor the mere projection of our own ambitions under a pious name. It is the revealed will of God, His Word opened to the soul, His truth preserved century after century for our guidance. The wealth of God's people seldom lies in ready money, their treasure consists mostly in promises to pay, promises which God has made to His own people. Where that revelation is neglected, men indeed cast off restraint and perish. Where it is loved and obeyed, they are kept in the way everlasting.

Therefore I would have you seek vision in the way Scripture directs. First, there is a revealed will which we must not violate. Nine times out of ten, look to the Ten Commandments and you will at least know what you must not do, and knowing what you must not do, you will be able to conclude what you may do. There are wonderfully plain directions in God's Word as to all manner of circumstances and conditions. Second, there is a providential will of God which we should always consult, with that guidance which comes from the circumstances that surround us. And third, there is that secret communion with Him wherein if you live near God, He will say things to you that He will not tell anybody else.

Learn then that Divine art of absolute resignation which our Lord Himself exemplified, I will, yet not as I will. You can always have your way when your way is God's way. The sure way to carry out self will is when self will is nothing else but God's will. When you say, I will do this or that, always add, in thought if not in words, If the Lord wills. No harm can come to you if you bow to God's sovereign sway. He does not save men against their wills, but the work of the Spirit, which is the effect of the will of God, is to change the human will, and so make men willing in the day of God's power.

Let us pray together for you.

O Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, from whom cometh down every good gift and every perfect gift, we thank You that You do not change and that You fulfill the visions You give. Grant to this seeking soul not the vision of mere imagination, but true sight. Open the eyes to behold wondrous things out of Your law. Guide by Your counsel, and afterward receive to glory. Dethrone obstinacy and give in its place acquiescence in Your divine will. Make this Your child willing in the day of Your power, to say from the heart, I bow to Your will, O God, and all Your ways adore. Keep from the folly of saying, We will go, we will do, we will get gain, without asking Your consent, and teach rather to say, I will go, or I will stay, if it be the will of God. Let the preservation, the perseverance and the eternal glory of Your people rest upon Your will alone, and let this one know the profit that consists in doing Your will. This we ask in Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your desire to know and follow God's will rather than only your own goals is good and pleasing to God, and I thank you for sharing this request.

The verse you mention, Proverbs 29:18, is often understood as speaking about personal dreams or goals, but its true meaning is about God's revealed word. Where there is no prophetic revelation, no preaching and hearing of God's law and truth, the people cast off restraint. The vision there is not an inner picture of your future, but the light God has already given through His Word. What keeps us from perishing is not a new private vision, but a clear and obedient hearing of what God has already spoken.

In Scripture, when God did give sensible visions, He did so for a specific purpose in His plan of salvation. Peter saw the sheet let down from heaven not because he sought a vision, but so that he would learn that what God has cleansed he must not call common, and so that the Gentiles might be received. At Pentecost there was a sound of a mighty wind and tongues of fire, but not for the apostles' own sake. It was for the Jews who were present, so that they might recognize the work of the Spirit. For those who believe, signs are not needed, because faith suffices instead of all, and we receive what was once manifested through the trustworthy witness of Scripture.

For this reason the health of our vision matters. As a disordered eye mistakes what it sees, so a mind made turbid by confusion can mistake its own thoughts for God's voice and create imaginary phantoms. A healthy vision is a mind made clear by the Scriptures, able to recognize the eternal purpose which God purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord, and to walk in it.

So my prayer for you is not that you would chase after new visions, but that God would give you a healthy eye of understanding, that you would see clearly what He has already revealed and follow it with joy.

Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning, and from whom every good and perfect gift comes down, I thank You that You do not change and that You fulfill what You have promised. I ask that You give this dear soul wisdom and understanding as they open Your Word, that You would guard them from following empty imaginations and from mistaking personal desires for Your voice. Grant a clear mind, a steady heart, and a love for Your commands, so that they may discern Your good will and walk in the eternal purpose You have accomplished in Christ. Lead them away from reliance on personal goals alone, and make them steadfast in faith, obedience, and trust in Your unchanging truth. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior, amen.

Your desire to follow the Lord's leading rather than your own personal goals is a good and humble desire, and it is right to bring it before Him in prayer.

The verse you mentioned is often understood as a desire for a personal mystical experience, but in its context it speaks of God's revealed Word and prophetic revelation. Where there is no revelation from God, people cast off restraint. The vision that keeps people from perishing is not primarily an inner picture or a night time experience, but the sure Word of God that shows His will and His ways. That Word is the solid ground for faith because it never changes, while experiences can fade, shift, or even contradict one another. If faith is built only on an experience, it stands on uncertain ground. If it is built on what God has spoken in Scripture, it stands firm because He does not change like shifting shadows and every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights.

Scripture does show that God has at times given visions to His servants. Paul was given a vision in the night of a man calling for help, and he went at once where the Lord directed. Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and John each were given visions of the throne of God and of things to come. Peter was given a vision to correct his understanding so he would go to those he had considered unclean. In those cases God was revealing the spiritual realm, which is outside of time and space, so that what was seen could be of distant places or of future events that had not yet happened in our time. A dream is similar but comes in sleep, while a vision comes while a person is awake and conscious, with a picture placed before the mind.

Yet many who have walked faithfully with God have never had such a vision or angelic direction. Their call came in a different way, as a deep and settled desire placed in the heart to serve and follow Him, confirmed and shaped by Scripture. God is sovereign and He may give a vision if He chooses, and we can remain open to Him to do so, but we are not to seek an experience as the foundation for guidance or to try to determine His will by waiting for a sign or by sensing which way the wind seems to blow.

The safest and most fruitful way to seek His direction is to seek Him in His Word, to pray for wisdom, and to ask Him to align your desires with His purposes. He delights to guide those who are searching for Him, and He often does so by His Spirit speaking through Scripture, by godly counsel, and by a growing burden or desire that He Himself forms within you.

We pray with you that the Lord will make His will clear to you through His Word, that He will guard you from merely pursuing your own plans, and that He will place within you the desires that come from Him and give you the conviction to speak and walk in His truth with confidence. May He establish your faith on the fact of what He has said, which never wavers, and may He fulfill in your life what He purposes for His glory. As you continue to seek Him, may you know His joy and peace and the assurance that He who has guided His people throughout Scripture is faithful to lead you step by step as you trust in Jesus Christ.

In Jesus' name, amen.
