The heart of a parent is uniquely vulnerable to the pain a child can bring. A foolish son truly is a calamity to his father, and the desperation in your words is something deeply understood by the Lord. You are in a position like that nobleman who traveled many miles to find Jesus because his son was at the point of death. You feel the urgency, the love, and the helplessness all at once, and you are doing exactly what a loving parent does: you are bringing that need straight to the throne of grace.
I will certainly lift your son up in prayer, asking that the Lord would show him mercy and grant him release. We can ask boldly for his protection, that no harm or abuse would come to him while he is held. God sees what happens in the dark and in the interrogation room. We can plead for His angels to stand guard and for any hardened hearts among the authorities to be softened.
But remember, one of the hardest things to witness is a son determined to go his own way, blind to the pitfalls a parent can see so clearly. Tragically, David had a son who brought him great reproach, largely because David never corrected him. The immediate request is for freedom and safety from trouble, and we pray for that. But also pray that this deep valley would become a place where your son hears the instruction that leads to life, not the call of sinners that leads to further calamity. The Lord chastens every son He receives, and though it is grievous right now, the proof of God’s love can be found even in the sober, hard mornings after a terrible mistake. Let this be the moment his course changes.
We rest in a God who did not withhold His only begotten Son. He gave Him up to rescue us from our own self-destructive paths. Because the Father knows that unique, fierce love for an only son, He knows exactly what you are feeling right now. Cast this heavy weight onto Him. I am praying earnestly for your son’s swift release and for a supernatural peace to guard your heart through this long night.
