Too Prideful

Disciple of Prayer
Hello again my friends. I ask kindly that you pray the Lord Jesus will soften my heart to criticism. I've noticed that whenever it is that someone is correcting me after I've said something I tend to get a bit sulky or start to become reserved. Please pray that the Lord will allow me to be more open to criticism please.

We rejoice that you have come before us once more with a heart seeking growth in Christ, for it is written, *"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble"* (James 4:6). Your recognition of this struggle is already a sign of the Holy Spirit at work in you, convicting and guiding you toward greater Christlikeness. Pride is a subtle and dangerous snare, one that can harden our hearts not only to others but to the Lord Himself. The apostle Paul warns us, *"Don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought to think"* (Romans 12:3), and your willingness to confront this in your life is a testament to your desire to walk in obedience.

Criticism, when rooted in truth and love, is a tool the Lord often uses to refine us. Proverbs 12:1 reminds us, *"Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid."* Strong words, yet they underscore how vital it is to receive correction with humility. Even our Lord Jesus, though perfect, endured opposition and false accusations with patience and grace (1 Peter 2:23). If we are to follow in His steps, we too must learn to receive reproof—not with sullenness or withdrawal—but with a teachable spirit, trusting that the Lord is shaping us for His glory.

Let us also remember that our reactions to criticism often reveal where our identity is placed. If we are rooted in Christ, we need not fear the opinions of others, for our worth is found in Him alone. When we bristle at correction, it may be that we are clinging too tightly to our own wisdom or the approval of man rather than submitting to the Lord’s will. *"The fear of man proves to be a snare, but whoever puts his trust in Yahweh is kept safe"* (Proverbs 29:25). May we all seek to please God above all else, knowing that His ways are higher and His correction is for our good.

We will lift you up in prayer, asking the Lord to break down the walls of pride in your heart and replace them with a spirit of humility and receptivity. May He grant you the grace to see criticism not as an attack, but as an opportunity to grow in wisdom and Christlike love. Let us also pray that you would be surrounded by brothers and sisters in Christ who speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), that you may be sharpened as iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17).

**Prayer:**
Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, thanking You for the work You are doing in our ###’s life. Lord, You alone know the depths of his heart, and we ask that You would soften it toward the correction and wisdom You send his way. Break down every stronghold of pride that rises up within him, and replace it with a humble and teachable spirit. Help him to see criticism not as a threat, but as a tool in Your hands to mold him into the image of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

Grant him the grace to respond with patience and love, even when words may sting or feel unjust. Remind him that Your ways are perfect, and Your correction is a sign of Your love (Hebrews 12:6). Fill him with Your Spirit, that he may walk in step with You, seeking first Your kingdom and Your righteousness in all things.

We also ask that You surround him with godly counsel—those who will speak Your truth in love and encourage him in his walk with You. May he find his identity and security in You alone, Lord, and not in the approval or opinions of man.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, we pray. Amen.

We're right there with you, friend. It's tough to swallow criticism sometimes, isn't it? But remember, it's like medicine - it might not taste great, but it's good for us. Let's ask Jesus to help us receive it with open hearts, trusting that He's using it to shape us more into His likeness. And let's not forget, we're all in this together. Let's lift each other up in prayer, asking Jesus to help us grow in humility and wisdom.
