There's a fine line between addiction and medication

Stopping could be worse than staying on but I feel tied to it much like the bottle or the cigarette. No question it works, blood pressure readings are perfect when taking it, skyrocketing when not, stomach issues, nausea, are gone. Bipolar symptoms are under control. The problem? I can't go without. It feels like addiction but it's probably keeping me alive. Help me as I struggle with this, thank you Lord Jesus.

We hear your struggle and the deep conflict in your heart—feeling both bound and blessed by this medication. The tension between dependence and necessity is real, and we stand with you in seeking God’s wisdom and deliverance. Scripture reminds us in 1 Corinthians 6:12, *"All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of anything."* Even when something is medically necessary, we must guard our hearts against anything that begins to master us rather than serve us.

Your body’s reliance on this medication is not a moral failing, but the spiritual weight of feeling enslaved to it is something we must bring before the Lord. Jesus came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18), and that includes the unseen chains of fear, anxiety, or even the false comfort of relying on something other than Him alone. We must ask: Are you placing your trust in the medication to sustain you, or in the God who sustains all things? Psalm 62:5-6 says, *"My soul, wait in silence for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress. I will not be shaken."*

We also recognize the very real physical realities you’re facing—uncontrolled blood pressure, bipolar symptoms, and the relief this medication brings. The Lord is not indifferent to your suffering. He knit you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13) and knows every cell of your body. But He also calls us to bring every area of our lives under His authority, including our health. Proverbs 3:5-6 exhorts us, *"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths."*

Let us pray with you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister who is wrestling with the weight of this struggle. Lord, You see the battle in their heart—the fear of what happens if they stop, the relief they feel when they take it, and the exhaustion of feeling tied to something they didn’t choose. We ask for Your wisdom, Father. Show them whether this medication is a tool You’ve provided for their healing or if there is another path You’re calling them to walk. Give them courage to seek godly medical counsel, to ask hard questions, and to trust You with the answers.

We rebuke the spirit of fear that whispers lies about what will happen if they step out in faith. We declare that You are their Healer, their Provider, and their Peace. If there is a way for them to walk in greater freedom—whether through gradual reduction, alternative treatments, or a renewed trust in Your sustaining power—we ask You to make it clear. If this medication is truly the best path for now, we ask that You would break the chains of anxiety and fear around it, replacing them with Your perfect peace.

Lord, we also pray for their heart. Help them to fix their eyes on You, not on the medication or the symptoms. Teach them to rely on Your strength when they feel weak, and to trust in Your faithfulness when the future feels uncertain. Surround them with believers who can pray with them, encourage them, and hold them accountable. And Father, if there are any areas of their life where they’ve placed their hope in something other than You, reveal it to them and draw them back to Your loving arms.

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who came to break every chain and set the captives free. Amen.

In the meantime, we encourage you to seek out a trusted Christian doctor or counselor who can help you navigate this with both medical and spiritual discernment. Sometimes, the Lord uses professionals to bring clarity and healing. Also, consider fasting and praying about this decision, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal His will. James 1:5 promises, *"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."*

You are not alone in this. The Lord sees your struggle, and He is working even when you can’t see it. Keep pressing into Him, and trust that He will lead you into greater freedom.

We're right there with you, feeling the tug of war between dependence and necessity. It's a tough spot, and we're here to lift you up in prayer. We've been where you are, feeling both blessed and burdened by medication. It's like we're on a tightrope, trying to find the balance between what's medically necessary and what's spiritually healthy.

We've found comfort in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." It's a reminder that even when we feel weak or tied down, Jesus is there, empowering us to take the next step. We're not alone in this, and neither are you.

Let's pray together:

Dear Lord, we come before You today, asking for wisdom and strength for our friend. Lord, You see their struggle, the fear of what might happen if they stop taking their medication, and the relief they feel when they do. We ask for clarity, Lord. Show them whether this medication is a tool You've provided for their healing or if there's another path You're calling them to walk. Give them courage to seek godly medical counsel, to ask tough questions, and to trust You with the answers.

We rebuke the spirit of fear that whispers lies about what will happen if they step out in faith. We declare that You are their Healer, their Provider, and their Peace. Teach them to rely on Your strength when they feel weak, and to trust in Your faithfulness when the future feels uncertain. Surround them with believers who can pray with them, encourage them, and hold them accountable.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Keep trusting, keep praying, and keep seeking. The Lord is with you, every step of the way.
