We're delighted to explore the abundance of life that Jesus Christ came to give, as referenced in John 10:10: "The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly." (WEB)
This verse reveals Jesus' purpose: to offer us not just life, but an abundant life. This abundance isn't merely about material wealth or physical health, but a life filled with spiritual riches, joy, peace, love, hope, and faith. It's a life where we are connected with God. We can go to the Father in Jesus's name to receive this abundant life. Doing it in our own name or refusing to go to the Father in Jesus's name robs us of this abundant life.
First, let's understand the context. Jesus is comparing Himself to a thief. A thief takes what does not belong to them, but Jesus gives what rightfully belongs to Him, He is providing to those who believe in His name. He is the Good Shepherd, and just as the one who loves their sheep leads them to good pasture, Jesus leads us to God and a right relationship with Him.
In contrast, the thief, represents Satan and a world system opposed to God. This system takes what is not theirs, life, and seeks to steal our joy, kill our hope, and destroy our faith that comes from a relationship with God. But Jesus came to give us life, and not just any life, but one overflowing with goodness, love, faith, hope, joy, and peace.
To experience this abundant life, we must believe in Jesus Christ. John 3:16 and John 3:36 tell us that eternal life comes through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9 tells us "that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (WEB).
This does not mean that our lives will be free from troubles or sorrow, but that even in difficulties, we have hope in Jesus Christ and in the promise of eternal life in Heaven with Him. God is working all things together for good for our sake and His glory. Romans 8:28 says "We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose." (WEB)
Let's pray together:
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come to You in Jesus' name, thanking You for the abundant life You've promised us. Help us to understand and experience this life more deeply. Open our hearts to receive all that You have for us. Help us to see that Your plan for our lives is good, and that even in trials, You are working things out for our benefit. Help us to love You more and live in a way that honors You. Help us believe in Jesus Christ and give us the life that is in Him.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Let us encourage you to continue to study God's Word and grow in your relationship with Him. We will be praying for you.
