The blood of Jesus Christ speaks: it does not cry out for vengeance like the blood of Abel, but pleads for mercy, uttering better things, forgiveness, cleansing, and peace for all who draw near with a sincere heart. This blood was not shed to be a charm draped over rooms, water, or food as though it worked by mere recitation. The old law often purified with blood, yet those rites were partial, half-complete, pointing to the true remission that would come. Now Christ has entered once for all, sanctifying the people with His own blood, suffering outside the gate to make us holy. That blood sprinkles the conscience, washing away the inward stain, so that we may serve the living God without fear.
You are anxious about medicines and mistakes, understandable cares. But do not imagine that safety lies in pronouncing a covering upon outward things while the heart remains troubled. The Spirit Himself intercedes with groanings too deep for words whenever a sincere soul falls before God. That groan is heard; the blood of the Mediator of the New Covenant gives it a voice clearer than any earthly cry. Therefore, instead of striving to shield your atmosphere or your cup by formula, seek the shelter of the wings that Christ spread wide when He lamented over Jerusalem: “How often would I have gathered your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks, and you would not!” Those wings are extended now. Run under them, by trusting His care, by confessing your frailty, by asking daily for wisdom to manage your medicines faithfully. If an error occurs, do not panic as though some spell were broken. Then is the time to remember that the blood of Christ has already spoken remission for your sins, and present your need to the God who quickens all things. He who sees the sparrow fall watches over you.
Be diligent: do not take your medications carelessly, as though presumption could replace prudence. But do not live in dread. The peace that Christ gives is not the world’s quiet, where men say “peace and safety” while destruction lurks; it is the peace of a cleansed conscience, the peace of one who has gone forth to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach and trusting His intercession. That peace will guard your heart and mind. So go about your day, take your medicines with attention, and when you lie down, commit yourself to the Lord. His blood, far more than the blood of bulls and goats, has already hallowed you. Let not your faith be in words you repeat, but in the living Word who gave Himself for you. And if you err, flee instantly to that same blood, which speaks forgiveness still, and rest in the love of Him who never forsakes those who hope in Him.
